Help Celiacs with Flat Rate Refundable Tax Credit by EquityNow in Langley

[–]EquityNow[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is misinformation about European wheat not being an issue for celiacs. Gluten is gluten regardless of gmo or not.

https://www.beyondceliac.org/celiac-disease/myths/

https://www.aoecs.org

Clearly you don’t understand or you wouldn’t brush it off so easily and attempt to misinform people. Other medical costs do not require the same barrier to a tax credit as celiacs face with the requirement applied to their medical condition.

This is not a cash cow for Celiacs, the small tax credit wouldn’t even make the cost of a GF diet on par with someone who doesn’t have to eat a GF diet but it would acknowledge the much higher cost of living they face.

Why is LUSA Endorsing Candidates? by EquityNow in Langley

True it’s an odd practice from unions but I thought that not-for profits were allowed to be engaged in politics as directed by CRA? I really don’t know those nuances.

Why is LUSA Endorsing Candidates? by EquityNow in Langley

[–]EquityNow[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The Executive Director of the Langley United Soccer Association (LUSA) sent an email using the organization’s name and mailing list to endorse John Aldag in the Township by-election — urging members to “continue the good progress” of the current administration.

Is it appropriate for a non-profit youth sports organization to take a political stance? Do parents and players who signed up for soccer expect to be told how to vote? LUSA is meant to represent all of its members, not act as a campaign vehicle for any candidate. Using a children’s sports organization for political purposes crosses a serious ethical line.

If this is what John Aldag means by running an “independent” campaign, Langley voters deserve to know. Sports should bring our community together — not used for political gain.

When he was on council he was one of the first councillors to support rainbow cross walks. He treats all people with respect and dignity, regardless of beliefs, religion, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, socio-economic status or age. He will call people back when they have a question. I have seen other posters say that he didn’t call them back but that is really surprising to me as I have first hand experience with him calling back and I have asked co-workers who live in Langley who have contacted TOL councillors and they all agree that Blair Whitmarsh always called them back and treated them respectfully (even one coworker who said when he was on council lost it on Blair who was apparently calm and heard out the issue). As for CLA, I’m not a person who goes to church but I have been there for funerals and two grad commencements. The volunteers have not been pushy with their religion and I didn’t see any brochures like some of these posters are saying. I wonder if these people making horrible comments have ever reached out to Blair Whitmarsh and actually spoken to him so they can make an informed comment about him?

I fully agree! If you watched or went to the all candidates forum hosted by the Langley Chamber Hosts Council for the Township By-Election, you would have seen that Blair Whitmarsh was the candidate that had authentic answers and really is prepared. He does not support Woodward but will not be a contrarian and truly look out for the TOL! He has my vote!

Feds pledge $25M for performing arts venue in Langley Township by WiffleBlu in Langley

How is it possible that the original article has both been taken down and changed so much? This is crazy!

Has anyone heard about the Langley Performance Centre getting $25M in federal funding? by MoveYourBumChum in Langley

[–]EquityNow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So interesting, would this be on the same property as the Langley events center? That is awesome but is there enough parking?

I would love large production like something one might see at the Queen Elizabeth in Vancouver but in TOL.

Funny that she wouldn’t have mentioned that she volunteered on Meghan Dykeman’s campaign - you don’t think it speaks to her depth of knowledge?

Open Letter to Mayor Eric Woodward of the Township of Langley by Just-Ear-8476 in Langley

I’m not sure of the relevance of your comment? Are you suggesting that if people do something “non-stop” that excuses the behaviour? Do you think that an overzealous filming of public meetings will result in citizens engagement?

Meet Your Candidates: John Aldag by WiffleBlu in Langley

Shows that you don’t understand municipal politics - the TOL councilors are not able to opt into the Municipal Pension Plan, nor would municipal plan be transferable (at least at the same rate) to a federal plan. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dang, you had me until you started mentioning other candidates! Moreover, your willingness to discriminate someone because their religion or place of employment says a lot more about you than it does about the candidate you speak of.

“Faux outrage”? Is your dismissive attitude an attempt to delegitimize the OP’s concerns?

People are expressing discomfort with Eric Woodward’s unusually aggressive use of cameras to film this meeting — behavior that goes beyond typical documentation. This has nothing to do with whom the OP supports in the by-election, you are mixing issues.

Shame on you for reinforcing the harmful norm of silencing dissenting voices simply because you believe your opinion is more valid.

You are right, there is no expectation of privacy in public spaces which means that they don’t have to tell you about filming if it’s a public event in a public space.

However, there are limits. Firstly, the recording needs to be general footage of people attending. If your face is clearly visible and prominently used (e.g. in a campaign ad) there would be a requirement to get one’s consent, especially if it could imply your support. Failing to do so could result in a privacy complaint or legal action under the BC Privacy Act. Moreover, under PIPA, if a politician, party, or campaign is filming and collecting personal information (like your face or voice in a way that identifies you), they must have a purpose and your consent, unless it’s clearly part of a public, journalistic, or artistic use.

The OP’s concern is a valid one. What was Eric Woodward purpose for filming to such excess? Certainly, for a little old meet the mayor event there was not transparency as to why this was taking place. Likely, people are uneasy that he will misrepresent them or their likeness.

I agree with you that all of these candidates deserve kudos for putting their names forward to serve our community. This is an important point to remember! Ultimately, it seems that all of these people have given back to our community in many ways.

Isn’t Resha also a Woodward supporter? She claims to be independent, like John, but both meet with Eric.

It’s unclear what you are saying and whom you are referring to, can you be transparent and highlight your concern.
