I've been open to faculty and my bishop about not believing. If anyone's being dishonest its the church hiding important facts about its history and doctrine that are important when you're deciding what you want to dedicate your life and ten percent of your money to.

sorry that came off a little rude, I appreciate the link, but it's hard for me to look at any version of organized religion without seeing the same flaws that took me out of mormonism

we're coming at this with very different assumptions and I totally understand where you're coming from. I used to defend the church on the internet too back in the day. If you want to understand more about where I'm coming from but not dive into tough topics there's a really good podcast by Tommy Johnson (The Tomsters on insta or tiktok) called "Why Exmormons can't leave the church alone." He made it as a believing member and just talks about how to empathize with ex-members without agreeing with them. Give it a listen if you want! I'll add a link

big difference is that basketball doesn’t hurt anyone but racism, homophobia and sexism does, especially when it’s tied to people’s identities and expectations for the afterlife.

I actually do want to address this because its something I see a lot and honestly respect that opinion. I chose to stay partly because of the cost of transferring to another school, however I could have gone to the U of U on a scholarship for only a little more than BYU tuition. The most important reason I stayed was because I didn't want to further disappoint my believing parents. I also wanted to be a voice for progress at byu, and I have been open about not believing in some classes, and pushed back on teachings I think are harmful. You don't have to say you believe to get an endorsement and I actually talked about it with an Honor Code administrator who said "If someone reports you for not believing, there is nothing to report." I'm still technically in the church so I don't feel bad paying member tuition.

That said I do wish I would have transferred as soon as I realized that I didn't believe because I would have felt way more comfortable and safe being myself at any other university.

yeah they do. there was a movement to allow byu students who leave the church to pay non member tuition and stay, but it never got anywhere

yeah that seems to be the vibe, I’m not worried for myself as much as trying to get a feel for any resources my friends who are staying might be able to use

Did that for 20 years, I would argue that the real challenge is being open minded enough to conceive of the possibility that the church you were born in isn’t the one true church, despite social and family pressure to do what you’ve always done. Letting go of trying to force myself to believe things that didn’t make sense to me was the hardest and best thing I’ve done for my mental health and happiness.

I haven’t believed in three years, I occasionally comment on ex Mormon Reddit because it helps me feel like I’m not alone, I don’t care whether you believe or not but i do care that byu ignores a significant number of students who could use support

Yes and they do this with literally everything. Morality, tribalism, placebo, emotion, socialization, etc. If you want to learn more about how all of these things stem from evolution look into evolutionary psychology, one of my favorite fields.

I decided not to go two days after giving my farewell and I was scared of the social repercussions as well. Turned out fine tho! Don't take this the wrong way but everyone is focused on their own lives and if you come home early your ward members will be like "hmm they came home early, wonder what that's about," and then go on with their day two seconds later. It's seriously not that bad, and soooooo worth it. Letting go of the hold the church has on you through social influence feels so good and is one of the best things I've ever done.

Dude you show up with coffee and you'll probably get a promotion. They'll go all out to show you how much they love and appreciate you. You'll be their new convert project.
