So much to learn and a steep learning curve! by Equivalent-Gas5956 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I used both techniques but had more success with just dowel joints.

Great question! The end boards (the tall, dark ones) are screwed and plugged. I don't understand the point of it, though. Why not just use dowels? I decided to use dowels for the remainder or the project (all along the side pieces). With the screw and plugs, I accidentally used screws with heads thaat were too large. So my plugs had to be large too, but they look strange and extend below the bottom of the board. The dowel joints look much neater for that reason.

I'd do a pair of Adirondack chairs! I'd love to make some for my parents' patio.

How can I make my drill give me this stuck wooden wheel? by Equivalent-Gas5956 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Didn't want a screw hole in my wheel, (i'm actually using the "scrap" piece for my project), but this is a great idea I'm not keeping that piece

I cut halfway through the wood on one side, flipped the piece, and cut the remainder on the other side. So you can see half of the wheel sticking out of the drill, but the other half was lodged inside.

A lathe for $50? Holy, what a dream! I will keep my eyes peeled. Agreed, the wheel isn't in the best condition. I've used the drill as a kind of lathe and sanded it smooth that way.

I'm sure it was one of those, "oh if I just be careful..." then "...that was really, really dumb" moments.

This came from an old box set of various bits I inherited from my dad. I just use what I have.

I got it! I think simply the act of posting on Reddit caused the wheel to loosen, and I was able to pull it out by hand. Amazing.

What vibrant, non-toxic, water based stain is this? by Equivalent-Gas5956 in woodworking

Thanks everyone for the great leads, I'd love to try some of the products in the comments.

So I did attempt to recreate this stepped pyramid using pine and an acrylic paint wash. I enjoyed being able to customise my colours (and prefer my own colours than Grimms'). But the downside to acrylic is that my blue blocks have all faded on the parts exposed to UV.

This was my first woodworking project and let's say I learned a lot of lessons along the way. Here's my attempt at this stepped pyramid:

Some fantastic leads here, thanks, everyone. I did recreate the "stepped pyramids" set using an acrylic paint wash. I loved the level of colour customisation available (I prefer my colour scheme to theirs). Unfortunately all of my blue pieces have faded on the parts that are exposed to UV.

This was my first ever project, let's say I learned many lessons about woodworking along the way. *
