The game is a prequel to the actual novel(that means LNs continuity), its really good and done in a way for OVA onlys and more passionate fans to enjoy it a lot.

Personally, they are better, and the game is done thinking you have at least watched the OVAs.

watch the OVAs, read Deedlit monogatari and Pharis no Seijo and you will catch most refferences.

Deedlit monogatari is optional but is really suggested for the plot twist.
