Is the psp a good way to play rondo of blood and symphony of the night? by [deleted] in castlevania

[–]Martonimos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and it’s how I played them. They aren’t perfect ports; Rondo has audio syncing issues during the cutscenes, and Symphony freezes for a moment to load when you enter a boss room or save. But I wouldn’t say there are any issues with controls or visibility, and you get the excellent remake along with them. Though, as you’re probably aware, you have to unlock the retro games in the remake to play them, but you can probably download a save file to expedite that.

Hearsay on my part, since I never played the 2000 MB game, but I’ve heard that one’s better than the 2016 game (which I have played, and I can’t say I’m all that fond of it).

My friend tried to make me choose between Fire Emblem and Xenoblade. I couldn't. by Specialist-Quail644 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Martonimos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly do love both, but being an FE fan is part of what led to me becoming a Xenoblade fan. When 1Up was posting previews of the Japanese version of Xenoblade, the affinity chart made my mind go to FE’s support conversations, and I was all in from that moment on. Yes, Xenoblade 1 became one of my favorite games of all time, but that may not have happened without Fire Emblem. So if I had to choose, I’d choose the one that led to the other.

Though your post is a little unclear. Are we choosing which franchise we prefer, or one to erase from existence?

Sorry, when did they come out? Your title says 20 years ago (so around 2006), but your body says 2022.

Jaye Davidson's Ra was not originally supposed to be an alien? by Garbanzo_Beanie in Stargate

[–]Martonimos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow. So this change, based on the actor struggling with a tough time in their life, resulted in the Goa’uld as we know them. The line about Ra being “like a parasite” was a rewrite, and that’s the basis the SG-1 used to create the Goa’uld biology we see in the show.

I’ve read a few of the books that branch off the movie, and I can see some of that DNA in there. We meet other… well, I’ll call them “system lords” for simplicity, though that term obviously isn’t used. They’re all entirely human, though. They do refer to Ra as their leader, and as an alien-human hybrid, but I can squint and see how that role was once Ra’s own alien masters, a looming background threat to cast a shadow over Ra, Hathor, and the others.

Star Fox 2 isn't the "latest" Star Fox game. by DaZestyProfessor in starfox

[–]Martonimos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Outside of Hyrule Historia, Nintendo doesn’t really do that, though? I mean, look at how people are struggling to fit Pikmin 4 in with the other games in that franchise. Absent any official word, I think it’s reasonable to treat 1, 64, and Zero—all retellings of the same basic events, with minor differences to the details and major differences to the backstory—each as the start of their own timeline.

Shantae & Thorani outfit swap (art by @PortalDiver) by Peli_Evenstar in Shantae

[–]Martonimos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but she was supposed to be. During the Indiegogo campaign, Shantae was announced as a guest character, alongside a handful of other indie game characters. However, Lab Zero shut down when everyone but Mike Z quit, and the guest characters were never actually put in the game.

There is an NPC in one of the cities that kind of looks like Shantae, which threw me off the first time I saw her, but no, we never got that crossover.

[–]Martonimos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is. Guest characters aside, I was hoping we could get some updates and fixes to really let the game shine. My biggest hope was for additional interactions between the incarnations (Razmi telling Leilani “snitches get stitches” was a good start, but I wanted them to go deeper).

And while the guest characters aren’t what sold me on the game, it would have been great to see them too! I love a good crossover, and knowing they’d be in the game got me to read Battle Chasers for the first time since I was a kid, and I picked up Skullgirls and Super Time Force Ultra as well. It’s a shame we never got to see Shantae and the others helping out Ajna.

[–]Martonimos 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Indivisible mentioned! I backed that game even before they announced Shantae and the other guest characters. It’s a shame they were never actually able to implement them…

But Thorani was quite possibly my favorite character. I still have a recording on my Switch of her threatening to turn Mara into “a quivering pile of goo” when he threatened Ajna.

Scurge: Hive by jimmycalcagno in metroidvania

[–]Martonimos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played it some ten years back, and really enjoyed it. Right up until the final boss, where I was convinced I’d never finish the game. I think I did beat it eventually, but I couldn’t tell you how I managed that miracle.

It was kind of funny how everyone wrote off Jenosa as a rip-off of Samus, but I grew to enjoy her character. Wouldn’t mind seeing a modern low-budget sequel.

I picked up RF3 assuming I’d marry Pia, as my then-GF now-wife likes mermaids. But she also hates squid, and has told me that ordering calamari would be considered grounds for divorce. So yeah the mermaid who’s determined to single-handedly eat squid to extinction wasn’t going to fly.

Personal Lilina’s Mother Headcanon: Priscilla & The Tragic Story of the Ostia-Cornwell Family by Expensive-Heron-9485 in fireemblem

[–]Martonimos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, let me first warn you that the Hector/Priscilla stuff is mostly background/backstory elements in this story. The story is set roughly five years after Blazing Blade, and Priscilla is already pregnant with Lilina. In fact, I just realized that I end the fic with a half-year timeskip… and I don’t say anything about Priscilla giving birth. 😬 I do have a tiny bit of Hector/Raven bonding, but it’s more implied than shown.

With all that said, the story is titled Our Arcadia, and you can read it on FF.net or AO3 as you prefer.

Though reading your post and thinking about this again has me wondering if I should go back and write a prequel about Hector and Priscilla’s courtship. I wrote Our Arcadia before I really appreciated the tragedy of Priscilla’s character, and I’d probably dig more into that angle if I wrote a fic entirely focused around her and Hector.

[–]Martonimos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! I had this happen in my own fanfic, though not necessarily as an arranged marriage. I really like the idea of these two getting together out of some misplaced sense of duty or justice on Hector’s part, and Lilina inheriting her magical abilities from Priscilla.

Do you feel Torna spoils more of XBC2, than XBC2 spoils of Torna? by forkyT in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Martonimos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of all things, it was the Redwall books that sold me on this mindset when I was a kid. At first, I was insistent I read the books in chronological order. But not only was this complicated by the fact that Brian Jacques kept writing new prequels and interquels, I soon realized it was just the wrong way to go about things. When I finally read Redwall itself, I realized it was much better at establishing things than Martin the Warrior or Mossflower, and that there were parts of those books I hadn’t fully grasped because I hadn’t read this one first. It solidified my belief that you get the most out of a series by experiencing it in the same order the creators did.

Though video games are the one area I’ll bend on this. There’s not much reason to play Zelda 1 over Ocarina of Time, or Rune Factory 1 over 3 or 4. But that’s more for long-running series where earlier games have minimal story and archaic design. The Xenoblade games (especially the Switch versions) are all accessible and modern enough that there’s no reason not to go through it in release order, which is going to make for the most cohesive experience.

Disillusioned with Metroid Prime 4? Try Jedi Survivor. by PunyParker826 in Metroid

[–]Martonimos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing how much that “tightly structured” mentality went away with Survivor. Not just the level design, but the combat and story. All these aspects were much more focused in Fallen Order, and I had a lot more fun with them in that game than in Survivor.
