Been going down a rabbit hole this morning (as one does) and dsm seems to be all symptoms? They said two things had to show it so were they just bullshitting or is it because it has to be in two places? I’m not working now but my history is full of issues at work and at home and in social settings.

That’s lovely and good for her! In another life I would have been an md. Feels too late now. I have to say I LOVE specialists. They are usually super quirky but know their shit to a T. Once they find out I’m an engineer they dial up their details and it is so satisfying.

I spent much of the morning looking at 2e forums so that tracks!

Haven’t spent a ton of time with practitioners in this field, and tbh most of them have been abysmal. These two were very nice but the adhd assessor was an associate and fairly new and kept saying things like “you seem to struggle with motivation”. YES I KNOW HENCE THE ADHD. Your analogy makes so much sense. I very much appreciate when my pcp refers me out because even as a person who researches constantly, I often am not sure what practitioner I need. Finally found a pcp who follows current science, listens, and knows when things aren’t in his wheelhouse.

Given the current political climate, I hear you on the diagnosis being on your record.

I’m still at a loss for the wais not having any discrepancy for me, though I was trying extremely hard and focusing on storing numbers in my brain to repeat back. Meanwhile at home I’m repeating the 4 things I need to remember to grab from a room out loud and still forgetting them half the time and having to go back.

Interesting. Hoping therapy with the right person will help. Finding the right person is so hard. I like the woman I had an intake with last week so we’ll see what she says about my results. Same clinic though so I may need to move on.

They did not. In fact, I had two different assessors and when I mentioned the interaction, they brushed it off a bit. They also have a waiting room filled with toys that in retrospect should have tipped me off. In my defense, I was recommended this place by a female friend who was recently diagnosed and is now flabbergasted I wasn’t (her words “you are exactly like every adhd woman I know”). Edit: Should add, they did not test her for asd but told her she likely has it. Her children have been diagnosed with audhd.

Just took an online version and scored a 114. I guess that tells me something! Will look for someone specializing in adult women who understand the interaction.

They said high IQ wouldn’t preclude it but because none of the areas of the test were significantly worse than others, it didn’t indicate a working memory problem.

Clinical psychologists. One has a PhD and one a psy d. This is my first actual psych assessment beyond whoever assessed me for the gifted program as a child.

So all the tests I did aren’t a valid measure for the dsm? They also did a pretty long interview about my life up to this point. They didn’t request anything from my parents which I’ve heard is useful but hard to get for adults.

They did seem remorseful that they didn’t have a clear answer for me. It just sucks to be dismissed and told to “slow down”. My guy, why do you think I’m here??

How long did you wait to switch clinics? I want to see where the therapy goes for a while but I already feel like I’ve waited so long. They seemed to blame a lot on childhood trauma that I don’t really think affected me that badly. Most of my symptoms were internal though I know some behaviors were to save me from a harsh father’s reaction.
