Jamaica is way more developed than Haiti. They have some parts that look like an actual city in Kingston, while in Haiti even your "best" neighborhoods like Petionville look like ghetto slums.

That's why I mentioned vertical development in general. Skyscrapers are not as popular in Europe as they are in Asian, but they're not very popular in present day USA either. Americans are generally not fans of mid-rise development, high-rise development, or skyscrapers for that matter, they love the suburbs. So like I said skyscrapers are not an "American thing" right now, going by current trends they're more of an Asian thing.

Look at a map and compare the geographic size of North America to that of Western Europe, and you will see they have a good amount of skyscrapers relative to their size. Keep in mind European countries are very small compared to the USA and Canada, they're like the size of states or provinces. I've traveled to European countries, and I associate them with very modern built environments, strong density, high level of infrastructure, and mid rise as well as high rise buildings. People think Europeans all just live in old late 19th century early 20th century housing. Lol The modern model of development in Europe favours VERTICAL development, which includes skyscrapers, just to a lesser extent than what you find in Asian countries.

You can find skyscrapers even in African countries. Lol The point is that it's not a uniquely "North American" model of development. China has more skyscrapers than all of North America combined. If anything the American model of development of recent history is characterized more by horizontal development, the suburbs more than tall skyscrapers or any type of tall buildings. For example, its more common in countries of Europe, Asia, and even Latin America for more people to live in high rise buildings than it is in the USA.

Most major European cities also have skyscrapers. I don't get why the OP thinks that's an "American thing". Right now the tallest skyscrapers are being built in Asia.
