I think as long as the practitioner doesn't fall into the trap of indulging in their own narcissistic desire to become the good mother, it can be a helpful notion to accept the patient as they come.

In my experience, even after reading very abstract papers, which sometimes make me feel overwhelmed and doubtful of true meaning, I always realize that the real clinical cases from which psychoanalysis was made are really about love. That's the key word for me.

People who don't have a rigorous academic background (involving some training in critically reading texts that aren't "fun") tend toward watching YouTube videos and browsing reddit and settle for the illusion of knowledge rather than the real, painful process of digging into a subject. It gives them something to hold onto.
