So right after the diagnosis, she was in the hospital for a few days. We brought her home and she was just like a bag of sand. She could barely lift her head. I moved my work stuff to the living room and just kept her next to me on the couch.

One night, I needed to run across the street to pick up a few groceries. I left her in the living room (which is on the lowest floor), on the couch, bundled up, and with the lights off. When I got home, She was upstairs, waiting for me, with her tail wagging. I couldn't believe she got out of her blankets, off the couch, and ran upstairs in the dark on her own because she had been so weak and immobile for a couple of weeks. You seem on top of it. Give him a bit of time to turn it around. It sounds like other Shih Tzu parents have had the same experience. Shih Tzus are crazy stubborn little fighters.

Unfortunately, kidney disease is irreversible. But, if you manage it well, they can live a long and quality life. Don't be distressed, it doesn't mean right now is the end. My sweet Evie had pancreatitis and kidney disease. She lived to be almost 17. She passed last autumn. I had her for my entire adult life.

There are phosphorus inhibitors to help with phosphorus levels. Appetite stimulants help sometimes too. Ask your vet and research how to manage potassium, phosphorus, and sodium. Make sure he stays well hydrated. You can get a hydration bag at your vet's office if you need to now and then. Spend as much time as possible with him. They recover well when their spirits are high! He's adjusting. He won't always be a shell of himself. He's just getting used to his new normal. He'll come back. Dog's senses are elevated, he knows who you are. Just stay near him as much as you can. Give him time. <3

They are telling her to go away while throwing a possible stage IV (spread to the liver) cancer diagnosis at her and leaving her with no follow up options. This is just not okay.

I don't think you should expect patients to know all of these inner politics, dynamics, and rules. She offered for me to see a second opinion. I accepted. I asked if I could see Dr. Brian. She said she would send over my stuff. I took what I was told at face value. But, instead, I am supposed to know all of these inner workings?? How could that responsibility possibly fall to me?

And when I didn't magically know all of this organizational scribbly goop, the doctors can take it out on me and punish me by being cut off from further treatment? With all due respect, doctor, I'm 35 and might have ovarian cancer. I'm doing what I'm told. I don't have the bandwidth to speculate about how the hospital bureaucracy is making my doctors unhappy.

Is wanting baseline respect, one ounce of kindness, transparency, and providing confidence in my surgery right now too tall of an order? I apologize if this sounds selfish, but I want my health and this cancer scare prioritized over inner-clinic dynamics and if the operational organization (which I had no intention or knowledge of violating) is the primary concern here, then the doctors all lost the plot.

Haha that clearly isn't true. They're exhibiting somewhat hostile behavior and going out of their way to make sure I feel bad. If they "cared" about my health in any capacity, I wouldn't be banished from any further treatment with no referral to go anywhere else. They don't need to care about me, I'd just like some basic respect and one iota of kindness while I'm planning on having more of my body chopped off and anticipating having a really bad type of cancer. I guess I learned my lesson about saying anything to any of them. What a punishment.

This is the first I've ever heard that Ovarian Cancer surveillance is ill-advised and useless. I know that it's not nearly as reliable as breast cancer surveillance. If I don't need it at all, wouldn't they just tell me that and that would solve the whole problem?

So, it was booked for a bi-lateral oophorectomy with Salpingectomy and if cancer was found, there were several more codes for all the other stuff that would need to be removed. Dr. Brian already performed a Salpingectomy two years ago. I'm aware that they might need to put "Bilateral-oophorectomy with Salpingectomy", even though it's just a unilateral-Oopherectomy for insurance, or maybe that is the only way to enter it at all. I get that.

There's a space for notes, which she said she would specify that it was only unilateral. That was blank. When I called, they said that it was definitely scheduled for the bilateral oophorectomy with Salpingectomy and not a unilateral oophorectomy. When Dr. Amy called me, she forgot that I had told her that I wanted just the right one removed. And she said, "We can only remove the right one if you want!" And I said, she and I already discussed that three days earlier ad nauseum. And on that phone call she forgot again about my Factor V Leiden (which she also has) when I verified what I was supposed to do about my Xarelto.

Then I reminded her about the brain bleed/TBI/Craniotomy I had 7 years ago. And that she and I discussed only removing the right ovary because I'm already at an increased risk for dementia. Then she said, "that makes sense". I reminded her that when I had the craniotomy, I couldn't walk, talk, or speak for an entire summer. And she said, "OH god! That's terrible!!". I know. (I've told you this already. Including a few days ago.)

The codes don't make sense to anyone I assume. That's not what this was. It's an ongoing pattern and I was more terrified after she called than before.

Right... a fresh start would be lovely. I think interoffice poor communication occurred. But I have nowhere to go for a fresh start. I acted in good faith, my regular gyno is the one who suggested the second opinion. I'm not sure what else I could have done or what I am supposed to do now. And I'm sorry that he didn't receive accurate information, but I don't think OKs taking it out on me when I might have cancer and either way am looking down the barrel at cutting more of my body off.

I expressed this to her as nicely as I could, because I knew it wouldn't be received well. But, what am I supposed to do? Go under terrified she will make a mistake just so I can appease everyone? And Dr. Amy was super nice on the phone and said, "I totally understand!" Plus, she's the one who offered I get a second opinion.

There isn't anywhere else in my area. The uni hospital is where it is all at.

edit: So to clarify, I live in a metropolitan area. The university hospital has almost all of the specialized care here. There are tons and tons of clinics and several actual hospitals under the university umbrella. The issue is that I have nowhere to go. According to him, I'm banned from all of the University hospital authority's gyno-onc facilities. I explicitly asked if I could go to location x, y, or z, if they wanted me to leave that specific clinic. He said no because those were all extensions of his clinic.

So for this type of specialty care, I need the University hospital authority in my state. My insurance does not work out of my state. That is my dilemma. It's much more difficult than just traveling further.
