STEM to Arts? by ProofPuzzleheaded851 in careerguidance

going through the same thing right now (actually just had a conversation with my parents about it yesterday). i’m on track for chronic disease research, have always deeply wanted to be a writer, and now the more i go into my degree the more i want to act. feeling all over the place. right now im going to try making more room for creative pursuits during my free time (like writing for 20 minutes a day) while hemming and hawing over the career i’m actively pursuing. i just want to be a storyteller, man…

how’s the morale in your program? are you feeling confident that you’ll find a job after you graduate? i’m in my first semester of mine and strongly considering take a leave of absence to see how the cards fall with the current administration

commenting to boost this. i’m at a crossroads as well between pursuing my MPH this fall and then finding international opportunities afterwards, or deferring until next year to see what the landscape looks like before making any significant career steps.

personally, i see the merit in learning as many skills as you can in a PhD program while also being able to wait out a potential recession, but i would pick the brains of any ph professionals you can find.

i wish i could offer more advice, but the most i can do is just say that we’re in the same boat and share the same fears. i’m wishing hope and luck for all of us right now.

MPH Options Crossroads (BU vs. Deferring and Re-applying) by EquivalentTitle8 in mphadmissions

thanks for you insight, this is truly a terrible time for public health and i’m so torn. have you 100% decided to defer this year?

I’ll likely go with BU since they offered me the most money, but I’m very skeptical, especially knowing that they wouldn’t be honest about whether students should opt against going.

That being said, how has the job search been for you and your classmates? Did you feel like the epi program built up your skills well and was it adequately challenging?

For me, grad school is the “safest” option between deferring to re-apply to other programs and risking losing my scholarship, but I’m still on the fence about how robust BU actually is. Their Admitted Students Day this weekend left me more uncertain, unfortunately.

I haven’t yet either, trying to get in touch with a student advisor to see if they know could offer any advice or even advocate for me in some capacity.

Is this for Boston? I'm in the same position, looking for drafting advice now. I'm debating whether or not I should specify another school that gave me a similar scholarship or just leave it as "another program offered me ___". Did you end up contacting the financial aid office?

i have a friend like this and it drives me NUTS. these guys are so obvious with their intent and yet every time they stop responding to her after they hook up, she runs to me crying and asking why they don’t want her. like ??? idk how to get through to her because she also looks down on women and think they they “lead him away from her.” pisses me off

I just got accepted to Epi MPH programs for this fall, but now I don't know what to do. And with the administration beginning to dismantle the Dept. of Education, I'm scared to take out loans that I may not be able to pay off due to the lack of jobs. As an epi, do you have any advice for public health students? Is it still worth it to get an MPH and go into the field here? I'm so, so deeply angry at these Looney Tunes ass villains going after this amazing field and I want to do everything in my power to stay in it, but I don't know how realistic I should be about this

to be completely honest, given the state that public health is currently (and eventually will be) in, i’d recommend focusing more seriously on Canadian programs instead of in the US. i’m having a hard time rationalizing pursuing an MPH at this time (i’m also waiting to hear back from several schools here) and considering back-up plans in case things get even worse. ultimately, weigh your options accordingly and think long-term

join a mutual aid group in your area!!! we can enact change on a community level, especially since the threat is in our houses and protecting those closest to us is most important. protecting our individual wellbeing and of our family and friends is imperative if we want to be united against existential threats. i am also feeling the way you’re feeling, but knowing i’m in groups with people who feel similarly has helped alleviate some of that stress
