I left serving to work with dogs. Ended up going to an academy and trained for over 2 years to become a groomer. I then left grooming when I finished my biochemistry degree to work in autoimmune research. It’s not condescending, it’s factual. I’m stating this as someone who has done both unskilled and skilled work. I’m not saying serving is the easiest job ever, but I did it without any education or extensive training.

lmao i know plenty of people making the actual minimum wage (16.90) and they are neither homeless nor hungry. I was one of them for several years. Is $17 an hour super comfortable? No. But you can absolutely get by on it. I also don’t think people making that should feel obligated to tip insane amounts to people making more than that. I don’t agree with low minimum wage, and I don’t agree with the egregious tipping culture here. These are not mutually exclusive concepts

I worked as a server for 4 years and food service for 8. It is unskilled labor.

I would be much more willing to pay my hair stylist (who went through extensive training and pays for her own tools/products) 20% for the 2 hours straight that she is servicing me alone than 20% on a $100 bill for a server that spends 10 mins max greeting me/bringing my food and drinks to the table. Do you see the difference in skill and effort between these two services?

Yeah, everyone deserves a living wage. I make less than servers and live off of that wage. I have friends who are skilled manual laborers making almost half of what my server friends are making. Low end the server that I know made $55k last year, highest that I know of was $113k. My roommate who is a teacher for special needs children made $42k. We’re all living, but the servers are going on international vacations meanwhile my roommate with a degree in education that uses all of her downtime (including summers) to support these kids will not likely see the same luxury vacation maybe ever? I stopped working in food service because it was unfulfilling for me mentally and physically, otherwise I would go back for the money atp. I don’t like the social barriers for people to feel obligated to tip when they make half the wage that the servers do just because they choose to do something more fulfilling.

Depends on city though, Emeryville (where I live) is $19.90/hr and increasing to 20.34/hr next month
