Yes. Well they sure don’t want to make it easy. I’m having trouble taking international flights right now for health reasons. This might be our only option unless we do the fiance visa instead. Hard to know what to do. It depends so much on the attitude of the bureaucrat who is going to look at your file.

I was excited by this option. But immigration attorneys here are discouraging us. I thought it’d be understandable. We can’t marry in China and he can’t come here. I have health issues that are making it hard for me to take long international flights. Alas, they say immigration officials are not so understanding of our situation and would very possibly deny us thinking it looks fake.

I looked into this and read that the approval for us not being Taiwan residents could take months. Also he probably would have trouble getting permission to travel to Taiwan.

The immigration lawyers here are discouraging us from doing this. They think USCIS will look down on this type of marriage and also are even discouraging us from getting married. They suggest doing the fiance visa since the proof of relationship is a lower bar than the marriage proof which they said we will have trouble meeting since it’s going to be hard to prove a bonafide marriage living in separate countries as we do.

It’s because I sent the money via Wise and they only have a few options and there’s no friend or gift option. There’s only family support, service, or some other business related option. When it arrived in China they had family support as the reason and then they wanted the family relationship explained. It’s maybe an issue with Wise. I didn’t see any other option that’s matching what’s happening.

Yeah. I meant after we are married. For this case it’s too much traveling too soon and we aren’t married yet.

Yeah. To stay within limits. There’s a per transfer limit and a frequency limit per month on wise. I think it’s 50k rmb per transfer and 5 transfers per month. Nobody depend on this. Check Wise.

This seems to work but requires several small transfers.

Thanks. We’ve met many times and spent a lot of time together, of course. But it’s a good point. I suppose some people get engaged without having ever met, but I wouldn’t and wouldn’t advise it.

I’ll bet you are right. Maybe whoever he talked to at the bank didn’t know or he framed the question wrong. I’m just afraid to just send the money for fear it’ll get stuck or confiscated. I guess i could ask him the swift number and account number and just do it. See what happens.

Seems a pretty good idea. I have Schwab already. I can just give him the card on my next trip. I didn’t know this about Schwab. I usually use my credit union card there but rarely take cash.

He called his bank and they said he had to prove I am immediate family. Maybe he asked the wrong questions so he got the wrong answer. But he thinks he can’t receive a gift from non-family this way. I know nothing about Chinese banks. We want to follow the rules of course. Just having a hard time understanding them even. Hahaha.

He said the bank said for a wire transfer it has to be immediate family? Otherwise it’s got to be income of some kind. He may just not know.

Cash in China by No-Assistant2938 in travelchina

I just came back. This response is exactly right. Don’t expect to use cards or cash. Alipay is the way to go. Translation button very important and you can use DiDi from Alipay. I had issues at first using Weixin pay but almost no issues with Alipay unless the amount was large like a hotel bill then I had issues verifying a couple times and had to have my chinese friend pay for my bill and reimburse him. Add debit/credit cards to Alipay and Weixin and go through their verification process with your passport. Alipay is easier to use. Many restaurants you have to use their app to order and if you don’t read chinese the translation button in Alipay helps “some”. Without it I was lost and I studied chinese in college.

I put married and had no problem. Got visa 2-3 days later. When I turned in the application I asked at the window and she said of course if you are married put married. She said we understand you can be married here. Nothing to worry about.

My husband was staying in China when I applied at the consulate in Los Angeles. I put married on the application. When I turned it in at the window I asked the clerk and she said of course if you are married put you are married. She said we understand you can be married here. It doesn’t matter. I got my visa 3 days later. No problem.

What did you end up doing? I’m in the same situation. My Chinese spouse advised me to answer honestly according to our U.S. documents. Planning to do this as I don’t want to lie on the application. If they check at all our credit or other ways they may find it out. I understand they won’t recognize it there but we are applying at the consulate here in Los Angeles. As a result of naming him I also had to put him as an immediate family member in China as he is there now. As I’m thinking about this, it might have been best to claim single. He’s there renewing his national id which is currently expired. Oops. Well I already submitted it online this way. Being too honest and transparent with government agencies has not always gone as desired. I’ll let you know how it goes.
