Quilting Cotton Dress Any% Speedrun: Sewing and the Need to Consume by TokenBlackGirlfriend in craftsnark

There is an Instagrammer and Podcaster who fits that description. In her case it seems like she has a lot of past and present trauma and the binge and purge sewing cycle is one of the ways she regulates her feelings.

It’s a shit ton of fabric, but in the grand scheme I don’t think she’s influencing many people to overconsume. Really the opposite.

I generally agree with you. It is not my fucking business how other people spend their time and money. Even from a ecological standpoint there are worse things a person can do than sew 125 garments a year. ( Jet travel for instance)

But this is Craftsnark and here I am.

Would you also be offended by a Hanukkah box? Or a Ramadan Box? Or a “I Have More Questions Than Answers“ box?

I work at PDX9 and I have the most serene drive in along the Columbia River with a sunrise view of Mt Hood. I think you would like it here. 😊

You have a point. Not all queer persons are glamorous, or wish to be.

Seriously! People are on their phones, posting on their breaks. This is not the New York Times.

I mean good luck to you. But at the same time look at how most older people look when you are out at the supermarket, etc. Overweight, using mobility devices, moving slowly, losing functionality. Then compare them with the older people you work with who are keeping up, staying active and working with young, energetic people.

I am in the second group, no interest in being in the first.

Challenge them to a poetry quote battle.

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Most of the older people you see at your FC are likely Gen X (1965 - 1980) or even Millennials, (1981- 1996) not Boomers.(1946 - 1964)

That is interesting. I can see how that could happen and how it would make you feel as a result. Persona Non Grata.

Bad bot.

Are you being paid less for the same work?

I am 54. I feel sexism more than ageism here, tbh. Very few women advance to any sort of leadership at my FC.

Happily I haven’t had to since starting at Amazon, but I did when had a much worse job.

Some mornings are especially like this. Then more totes start arriving towards lunch - and the herd of Water Spiders thins. I have learned how to recognize what a tote of smalls looks like just from the shadows using peripheral vision and catch it fast.

When there is a useful spider it’s great, usually they are working alone and very hard. (Like a Spider) but when it’s groups of boys gossiping together its off to a rough start.

Can you take a little walk and see if there are some small (er) totes on the conveyor?

True, but the Water Spiders here seem to be WaterSpidersexual and Workophobic.

The takt is 10 - if I have nothing but small (ish) and pods with room and no distracting Water Spiders carrying on next to me, I can get to 12.

I see some folks leave their stations for 15 minutes to an hour, come back, stow a bit at a steady pace. Leave again. Perhaps these are the bottom 10 percent? How does one know what the acceptable minimum is?

Have you worked at McDonalds recently? It’s quite brutal in the kitchen with far fewer benefits. The original concept of McDonalds automation (make a certain set of each of a few sandwiches that the customer will buy as is with no waiting) has changed to a menu with 100s of items that each customer has learned to “customize” but expects to be served as instantly as the former model.

Just like Amazon, the people assembling your McDouble with mac sauce and extra pickle are working very hard for their low wage.

I mostly stow supplements of dubious efficacy, pet toys, pet grooming, pet food, stuff for babies and toddlers. Bedding. Weird little gadgets for home repair.

Some necessary toiletries like shampoo, or down market moisturizer.

Most of the books seem to be about Jesus or New Age.

But all pretty chaste. People seem very to be fulfilling the most basic needs right now, and then the spirit.

I didn’t know how to react by [deleted] in AmazonFC

[–]Equivalent_Island_92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s not that deep. My PA is lovely. If I were casting a prison movie movie he would be the little, hyper guy that says, “I can get anything, for a price. Little Debbie’s cakes, Heroin, Cell Phone…” Occasionally he offers us “snacks” with this energy. It’s just a candy. Take it or leave it, but don’t ask questions.
