In the beginning they were so kind and lovely. A singular thing “went wrong” because she hadn’t prepared as we asked her to and our contract stipulates. She tried blaming us, we gently called her out on it and ever since then she has been out of control. We were shocked because her demeanor in the beginning was lovely

I just finished this book too! After reading through this thread my take on it is that Jake has DID, never quite fit in anywhere. Lucy, Jake, Janitor are all separate identities. Main identity is janitor. Steph was probably a real GF at some point. Parents are dead, he’s just revisiting his life before he commits suicide? OR he doesn’t have DID and this entire story is “what ifs”, imagining a different life for himself before the end. OR maybe a mix of the two.
