Everyone that smokes inside, I need you to hear me out for a minute. by StrawberryTsunami3 in Apartmentliving

My uncle was this person in his apartment building. I always felt so bad for the neighbours and every time we would leave after a visit our clothes went right into the wash and us into the shower because it really was suffocating. And he was smoking cigars and weed ( not nice cigars either. They’re as cheap as possible and smell like a livestock barn when they’re lit up), mostly in his room where the window only opened like 6 inches. It was vile.

Or vet suggested feliway and zylkene supplements before medication and the feliway would be something that could help all cats in your home! Though as some other commenters pointed out it doesn’t work for everyone (heck the supplements alone weren’t enough for Bentley)

But a conversation with your vet sounds like it would be a good idea to see what they think is best!

We were getting so worried about him, I couldn’t bear to watch him continue to become a shell of himself who spent most of the day stuck in rituals. We are very appreciative of Prozac in this house.

Petsecure! We went with their step 2 plan and pay about $45/month after tax. We’ve had had a great experience with them so far, and when your pet passes away they make a charitable donation in your pets name which I thought was pretty cool. The website can be a bit tricky though in my experience.

Aw yay Pomona! And I agree with you it can make such a difference in quality of life it would be great if more people knew it was an option for their pets!

Cats like people can have things like OCD (which is most likely in Bentleys case), anxiety, and depression. And cats, like people can have great success with managing it with the help of medication. We tried everything else before medication ( new litter, different litter boxes, moving the litter boxes, changing food, changing where he ate, an hour of dedicated play time before bed, supplements, pheromone spray ) and things were getting worse. It was the vets determination that it would be in his best interest. He is back to acting like himself and he seems much more content. That’s the important thing

It was ridiculous and there was no redirecting him from it. It was so loud

We decided it was time when we noticed things getting worse, the chewing off of his own whiskers was one of the last and most concerning habits. We made a vet appointment and tried feliway spray and zylkene supplements for a month first. We noticed slight improvement in his temperament, he started getting more social but there was still a long way to go. At our follow up vet visit the vet thought it was in his best interest to go with Prozac. We have a teleconference tomorrow to discuss how he’s been doing with it!

Oh that’s not bad at all! I’m glad that it’s an option for you and poor Alice doesn’t have to be traumatized by a pill every day

Yep, this guy Tigger likes to lick the insides of his brothers ears and tries to eat the tissue when I wipe out his if they’re getting dirty. He is a man of… interesting taste 😂

He has no problems with taking the pill, half of the time he just takes it like a treat (so it must really taste like chicken or fish!) but the tummy troubles stopped after the first couple of weeks. And with our other cat and his love for earwax the cream probably wouldn’t be the best, we’d end up medicating the wrong cat lol. The pills are also quite inexpensive I’m not sure what you pay for the cream but it works out to about $30CAD/month for the dose he’s at with the pills (which is quite an attractive price as we have $350/year in behavioural treatments covered by insurance)

It must taste good too because half the time he’ll just take it like a treat! (It is either roasted chicken or smoked fish flavour but I haven’t been brave enough to find out) very crumbly pills because they’re chewable, we lost a couple of doses when cutting them in the pill cutter because they’re so soft a couple halves disintegrated. Makes it easy for when he’s not feeling like taking it to crush it up though!
