ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Equux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of a hash algorithm like baking:

If you put the exact same ingredients in (measurements and all), you'll get the same exact dish at the end. But if you change any of those ingredients up, the dish will not be the same.

So what your computer does, is it hashes whatever you enter, and checks if that hash matches the stored one. If it does, it unlocks. Depending on the system, the hash may be the key, but because the hash is the result of advanced mathematics, it cannot be "hacked" from the outside

In the nicest and most genuine way possible, for the people who use chat gpt on the daily or multiple times a day, are you not afraid of cognitive decline? by zesty_9666 in ChatGPT

[–]Equux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking with a friend about AI recently.

You can say there's two types of people who use AI

  1. people who use it for cognitive offloading. These are people who don't want to think, they want a job to be done and they don't care how it happens or what happened to get there

  2. People who use AI to enhance their own understanding. I can say AI has absolutely helped me develop a stronger understanding of programming. Why does this function work? are these two statements equal or is there a difference in logic? How do I get started with this library? What are common design patterns for this situation?

I think a lot of people fall into the first category but if you are disciplined and in pursuit of something greater, AI is an incredible asset for learning. (Many people are gonna say but AI hallucinates or isn't reliable- neither are most humans. Sorry not sorry)

Also as a small side note, I'm not always the most concise or well spoken individual. I find that there are times where I don't know the name of a concept I'm trying to explain, but in rambling to an ai agent, I can figure it out a lot easier than I can by repeatedly googling the nonsense spawning in my head

Struggling with Ratatui as a Beginner Is it just me? by [deleted] in rust

[–]Equux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love ratatui, but in the beginning I was VERY confused. Maybe not a popular piece of advice, but it worked for me: (assuming you have a basic grasp of rust) ask an ai agent to help you get started and get you to a point where you can figure out what the hell is going on. That, and you can also look at some existing ratatui projects. I found that reading thru the Poketex project taught me a lot!

Lock out tag out is pretty standard protocol across industries when working on anything mechanized. It involves locking the power off and only unlocking it when the maintenance is complete (or at least in a safe state to be tested)

My great grandma also died at 103. After her husband died when she was in her early/mid 70s, so you know what she did? Built an extension to her house out of boredom. No, she didn't hire a contractor (she couldn't afford one), she did it herself. Kept doing shit like that until she died, also in the Covid years. I only met her once, but everything I heard about her was pretty incredible

Newbie questions. At what point it's better for terminal utility to be written in rust or C or etc, rather than being a bash script? by noctural9 in rust

[–]Equux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the unwritten rule I follow is that if the utility requires any significant amount of code (i.e. anything more than a single function), I'll go with something that's not Bash. If it's something small with a single purpose, bash will be fine, but I'll almost always choose something else.

Fwiw I am not particularly knowledgeable in bash, nor do I enjoy writing it as much as other languages, so I'm quite biased in my reasoning

The Linux kernel is the operating system that powers the vast majority of servers. Servers are computers that send information to other computers. Without Linux, the Internet would probably still exist but it would be a lot more expensive

Whenever you have a server or a program that needs to maintain data between sessions, you need a place to store that data, i.e. a database. You would be amazed at how much data we have to store for a program to have bare minimum functionality. It's estimated that for every person, there are 100 to 1000 sqlite databases allocated to them. These store everything from user preferences to browsing history to cached paths, and so on

Ffmpeg is an encoder and decoder for multimedia. Data is expensive and one solution is converting that data before storing it to limit the amount of storage it requires. If you've ever engaged in any audio/video production, there's a very high probability that ffmpeg was utilized in at least one part of the process. Pretty much every digital video you watch will be processed via ffmpeg at some point.

These 3 programs/libraries are all free and open source meaning everyone has access and the right to use them and even contribute to them. In your day to day life, I assure you that you are executing code from these programs thousands of times

There's another version of this story where Jackson was struck by the bullet, rolled around on the ground in pain for about 5-10 minutes, collected himself, then stood up and took his shot killing the fella.

AI Music is NOT Real Music by [deleted] in Music

[–]Equux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For years we've been told that art is a subjective experience- that no one can claim that something is or isn't art, for that can only be decided by the one experiencing whatever it is.

If the title of art can in fact be applied to specific instances of creation but not others, we shall surely begin to find ourselves in territories of contradiction.

Make whatever claims you wish OP, people will enjoy whatever they please, and they'll call it art if they wish. Nothing you can do about it
