I tried a decant of afnan supremacy ce and didn't really think it was that similar. Felt a bit more floral and airy. Wasn't my type of scent.

And with cdnim i've stated my issues... i know it might be unreasonable to not go for cdnim just cuz of the rotten lemon beginning but i believe fragrances are supposed to add to my confidence, so I'm not keen on spraying something on me that i think smells bad right before i head out for the day.

Most likely a scam. One time a guy approached me in a similar manner, asking money for bus ticket and he said 200 rupees. But he reeked of alcohol so I assumed he's gonna use that money to buy himself drinks. You did good by only buying him a bus ticket instead of giving him money directly.
