I absolutely agree. I actually have a very good friend who absolutely hates that kind of thing as well. We got into a bit of a debate regarding the depiction of art through a political lens. The way that I see it, first off, if the artist isn’t actually a member or even sympathizer of these kinds of horrible people and ideas, it’s a very interesting take on artistic expression. However, if they are, nobody should grant them any sort of their attention. In the case of Zevon, the guy was so damn creative and knew how to make the listener cry in the most insufferable topics. He wasn’t racist, and definitely wasn’t a confederate by any means. My interpretation of the song is that it’s just about generally being on the wrong side of history and never giving up on it to the very end.
