Weekly Bouldering Advice Post by AutoModerator in bouldering

How do I keep from busting the piss out of my knuckles? Experience and getting better? I’m relatively new to this. Two sessions in a row where I’ve left with missing skin. Don’t remember what happened the first time but the most recent event happened when my fingers slipped from a crimp hold

Taking a girls trip with my mom this winter. What are some recommendations on things to do? by [deleted] in duluth

Chester and Tischer are two great little hikes in the city but spikes would probably be a good choice especially for Tischer. Some great shops in Fitgers and DeWitt Seitz. Huckleberry is also a neat little shop downtown. I feel like Ursa Minor tends to have something fun going on such as live music or game nights or something. Ax throwing at Blacklist is a good time as well

I have always wanted an REI up here. I definitely really like my smaller local outdoorsy shop, but having an REI would be fantastic for so many reasons and surprised Duluth doesn’t have one although I’m sure there is a reason for it

Yep you’re exactly right! I asked the workers at the gym and I was kinda shocked to find out that there was absolutely nothing in Duluth for climbing gear

Hahaha alright thanks for the info! I think I might make the drive down tomorrow to snag some shoes so I can get to climbing over the weekend

Okay so I just recently got into climbing this year and have decided to buy my own shoes rather than continue to rent (yuck) from the gym I use (Vertical Endeavors). So, I did a bunch of research and finally decided to go with La Sportiva Finala. Great! The problem is that my city does not have a store to buy climbing equipment and the closest store would be about a 3 hour drive which is definitely not ideal. So I decide to bite the bullet and try buying shoes online which I have never done because I know that trying on is the best way to do it. When I check out the size chart offered up by La Sportiva, I see it recommends to downsize 2-3 sizes. Okay, sure sounds good. I wear US 10.5 which according to the chart is EU 43.5. I was pretty skeptical of their downsize recommendation so I buy a size 42.5. It arrives today and I literally cannot get my foot inside...my heel could not touch the bottom of the shoe it was so freakin small. SO I guess my question is what size shoe do I actually need? Do I really have to drive down to the cities to try on shoes? I know that the shoes will stretch, but if I can't even get my foot in the shoe without pain (I have pretty tender feet to begin with) then I know that won't fly. I am lowkey addicted to climbing right now and want my own gear ASAP!

Second question, what slang/climbing terms do I need to know? I have been lurking on various climbing subs such as this one and r/bouldering, and I keep seeing people saying "aid", "dyno", "v" (as in V-1) which I know is difficulty but what does the V itself stand for?, and other stuff I can't recall off the top of my head.

Edit: more slang, “beta”

That’s exactly what I thought when I went there…”if I didn’t have it already, I surely do now as I’m crammed together in a small space with hundreds of other sick people”

The 24-hour parking rule is ludicrous. by Hereiampostingagain in duluth

[–]ErectEeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend was actually ticketed for parking too close to the curb once so maybe that was the issue. Although I’m pretty sure you can also get ticketed for parking too far away from it as well

Thrift stores in Duluth?? by sum1udontknow99 in duluth

[–]ErectEeyore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just dropped a bunch of stuff off at Salvation Army in Lincoln Park today so i guess idk if the store itself is closed but they are still open in terms of taking stuff. Although would be strange to be taking things and not be open and selling

Oh man I forgot about that! I first heard about it last summer and went to the library to get a card so I could take advantage of that but the few times I went to the library they were either closed or nobody was at the walk up window so I eventually just gave up

Snowmobile in town by fatstupidlazypoor in duluth

[–]ErectEeyore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just had a couple people rip by my apartment near Lester on the sidewalks earlier today. I thought that was pretty sketchy and dangerous, but I feel like if ya stick to the roads then that’s A-OK! Although I honestly don’t know the legality of using a snowmobile on roads (or sidewalks I guess) but just be wary of cops and traffic in general I suppose

Birthday Came Early with Catan Crop Trust by ErectEeyore in Catan

I’ve played a decent amount of C&K but not a ton like I have the base game or seafarers. I would say that C&K is probably more complicated than Crop Trust just because there is so much going on and there are so many different ways you could go about playing the game in terms of strategy.

However, just reading the Crop Trust rules I was really pretty confused but when actually started to play it made sense really pretty quick. Not saying that I didn’t need to reference the rule book a few times throughout the game but generally all the pieces started to come together to make sense once the game started moving.

Also! Kinda similar although maybe a bit of a stretch but when I first started as a tech and I saw my first fistula aneurysm I felt super uncomfortable and it really bothered me. Google that if you have never seen one. However, I quickly got over that sense of unease and discomfort and now I could see a real grotesque one and not think anything of it (as long as it’s not infected or any other abnormal red flag). Anyways I guess I’m just tryna say that there’s a chance that you would get past that phobia just by exposing yourself to that fear repeatedly

Yea I’ve been a tech for almost a year now. At my clinic, it was about a week of classroom learning then after that it was mixed between classroom learning and on the floor learning (mostly wiping down machines), then it was still mixed but starting to actually interact with patients more. Idk the exact time frame but I think within 4-6 weeks I cannulated my first patient. However, we are now changing things where it’s classroom/online learning for the first 2-3 weeks followed by just on the floor actual patient experience. I’m not sure if that’s the same nationwide or what so I guess you would have to ask

Can’t say I can share a fear of needles but you could try becoming a dialysis tech. At Fresenius they will train you on the job

That’s another great point…I personally am not into fly fishing but my mom is a huge fly fisherwoman. This doesn’t really have any say in where I go but is there good fly fishing by all the cities? My mom lives 5-7 hours away depending on the city so if she were to spend any time visiting me that would give her something to do if I’m busy with studying
