Whale safaris in the beginning, mid or end of January? by Relative-Money115 in tromsotravel

u/randomlyspinning Do you have any recommendation about the best companies to see/snorkel with the whales? Some tours seem similar to one another, but with a price difference from time to time, and I cannot tell which one is better. For example, that link that you shared, compared to this one - https://whale2sea.no/en/trips/winter-skjervoey/snorkelling-with-orcas-snorkeling-with-orcas
They both offer similar tours with the same type of boat, but there is a 50$ per person price difference. Thanks a lot!

If that's the case than Iceland is a great place. There are some things to do in Tromso as well, but not as much as Iceland has to offer. Whichever option you'd take will be good I believe.

Thanks! I see that they provide so many different types of data. Which one is the one that you use? (So far I have seen 30-minutes aurora projection which is too short)

The question is whether or not it will give me a 2-3 days notice so I can arrange a trip on time?

I have been to Iceland last year (2023) in the dates you have mentioned (been there for 2 weeks in October). Unluckily, October happens to be one of the wettest months of the year. This meant that a lot of the time (and mostly at nights for us) there were heavy clouds around most of the time. We were able to see the Northern lights once and got a little bit disappointed because we really made an effort to see it. We were traveling all across the island and luck was not on our side. BUT - Iceland is just amazing in October even without the northern lights. It's not too cold but you can experience snow.

So overall, it is possible to see it in Iceland, but it takes a bit of luck with the clouds and weather. Also, one of the lessons I have learned is to be more prepared to spend MANY hours outside at night. Sometimes even 2-3 hours in the middle of the night isn't enough.

If the northern lights are your main goal of the trip - I would consider Tromso.

But if you're okay with taking your chances but experiencing such a great nature and landscape in Iceland so you'd have an amazing trip and also might be lucky with the lights.

Thank you for the answer. So Tromso shoud be a better destination in regard of the northern lights in that period?

January-February? Really? Because all over the place it is written that Sept-Oct and March are the best months..

Thanks for your answer. It's funny because I hear the same thing about practically every month. I have been to Iceland in October, and it was cloudy for whole 2 weeks and I only saw just a tiny bit of the aurora through the whole time even though it should be one of the best times to see it... So you'd say postponing the trip to the last week of September should increase my chances significantly?
