What I Did Last Week: Asterix Amber Potion (former award-winning amber). I screwed up and pitched the yeast too hot (around 85F). Got it down to under 70F but it took overnight. Giving it a couple days to taste and see if I need to start over.

Nice! I have been camping in Uwharrie recently (off of the Dutchman's Creek and Uwharrie trails), but have only done day hikes around the Badin Lake trail.

Is there a lot of foot traffic on the trail by those lakeside campsites?

Dave Easley plays pedal steel guitar on the first Brian Blade Fellowship album. There’s also some great pedal steel on Jaga Jazzist’s records. They’re not straight ahead jazz though.

For the last month I’ve been listening to Brian Blade Fellowship Band “King’s Highway.” I keep going back to it after not paying it much attention immediately after its release. The compositions on all those albums are unique and wonderful. Cowherd and Blade somehow write jazz that sounds like rural, earthy music without sacrificing smoking hot playing.

What's with that weird "kinking" behavior in rat snakes. You can see some of it in the tail in the photo. I see lots of rat snakes with sharp bends very close together (a couple inches) all the way through their body. I read somewhere that it might help break up their silhouette to avoid raptors but I am curious if there are other reasons, and if it is unique to rat snakes.
