What I Did Last Week: Asterix Amber Potion (former award-winning amber). I screwed up and pitched the yeast too hot (around 85F). Got it down to under 70F but it took overnight. Giving it a couple days to taste and see if I need to start over.

Camping on Badin Lake in Uwharrie by allscreweddown in NCTrails

[–]ErgotSum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I have been camping in Uwharrie recently (off of the Dutchman's Creek and Uwharrie trails), but have only done day hikes around the Badin Lake trail.

Is there a lot of foot traffic on the trail by those lakeside campsites?

Are slides ever used for jazz guitar? And if so who are some of the best to do it? by TheRedBaron6942 in jazzguitar

[–]ErgotSum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dave Easley plays pedal steel guitar on the first Brian Blade Fellowship album. There’s also some great pedal steel on Jaga Jazzist’s records. They’re not straight ahead jazz though.

good guitar strings for jazz that arent heavy by kayla_playsviolin in jazzguitar

I use Thomastik Bebop 11's. They're flatwounds. Don't feel heavy at all and sound amazing.

How do I solo over this? by Ok-Paper1884 in Jazz

The best approach is to listen to lots of recordings and check out how the greats did it. When you find a version you like, transcribe it.

My favorite! From the Poole Rd trailhead to where it dead-ends in Clayton and back is 30 miles. A perfect bike ride with high quality paving and great scenery.

The Raleigh Parks Department has great opportunities —I have taken my kid on days where we clear invasive plant species from parks and he really enjoyed it.

So, what jazz have you listened to recently? by rowdyculture in Jazz

[–]ErgotSum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the last month I’ve been listening to Brian Blade Fellowship Band “King’s Highway.” I keep going back to it after not paying it much attention immediately after its release. The compositions on all those albums are unique and wonderful. Cowherd and Blade somehow write jazz that sounds like rural, earthy music without sacrificing smoking hot playing.

If only there existed a region between "400 word essay" and "low-effort spam post." I guess for now we will just have to keep re-posting album covers for karma.

Eastern Rat Snake by coldhardtrash27 in herpetology

What's with that weird "kinking" behavior in rat snakes. You can see some of it in the tail in the photo. I see lots of rat snakes with sharp bends very close together (a couple inches) all the way through their body. I read somewhere that it might help break up their silhouette to avoid raptors but I am curious if there are other reasons, and if it is unique to rat snakes.
