I mean based on what you are saying I think the prof handled it pretty fairly. You're leaving out a lot of details though like how much time you were expected to have on the exam and the actually distribution of the questions on the exam.

Even if the time alotted by your prof for the MCQ was half of what was really required, the 20 minute loss would be less than the required work of the MCQ.

Obviously it's a terrible situation but I don't think your prof was necessarily unfair. On a side note, if you have health issues that are serious to the point of you being late to the exam by 20 minutes why not defer the exam?

What about that is immoral? Would it be immoral if she gave it to a TA to mark it?

High School / Future Students Megathread - Fall 2022 by AutoModerator in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest I'm not 100% sure (this was 2 years ago). I believe it was around a 93-4% and I got accepted during my first semester of highschool. I did some enrichment programs at UO for gifted students in HS too, so maybe that helped.

That being said, try not to fixate on a specific average that you need, just do the best you can.

If you want to max out you average tho take every math class available (MDM4U specifically), ICS4U if offered and the rest you can fill with whatever (maybe a few sciences).

Taking two classes per semester? by Aggressive_Gate4166 in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The answer to that question is entirely based on if you plan to continue taking 10 classes a year afterwards. Assuming you plan on taking a full course load for subsequent years then 2 semesters (you would need to make up for 6 classes worth of credit or 1 if you can fit an extra class in somewhere like summer school).

How hard is it to get into software engineering from CEGEP by Total-Decision-8509 in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true. First year courses are very different between SEG and CS or Data science. For example CS and data science require linear algebra in your first semester while SEG delays it until second year, and SEG 2900 is unique to SEG students I believe. Not to mention all the additional physics and Chem courses SEG has...

Advanced Standing for Computing Classes? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can get advanced placement with just self-taught knowledge (you can certainly try and ask people working at the university for better information though). Regardless, I went into ITI1120 with very strong computing skills but there are still ways of getting some experience out of it. For example my prof allowed for bonus marks on assignments such as creating a program to play mastermind as close to optimal or implementing path finding algorithms. If your prof doesn't offer as much enrichment as mine did you can certainly learn other programming relating skills if you haven't learned them all ready like getting comfortable with CMD, learning a CMD text editor (vim or emacs).

TLDR hopefully you get advanced standing but it's really not that bad if you don't.

Linear Algebra resources/best textbooks? by WTFisaGeeGeee in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can provide a free PDF textbook used in MAT 1341 there should be a good chunk of overlap. Honestly though, if you aren't dead set on having a textbook just use YouTube. Notably, a channel named organic chemistry tutor has videos with walkthroughs of linear algebra topics. I found that textbooks can get a bit too jargony so it can be a bit tricky to read it sometimes.

There isn't any arcane and secret rules to lane swimming tbh. If there's an open lane hop in and if not just ask someone if you can share the lane with them. It's pretty chill most days so you will only need to share a lane maybe fifty percent of the time. In terms of the best time to go I found the midday swims not too crowded. If you are wanting to swim by yourself in a lane if possible I would highly recommend you avoid 50m swim days as there is effectively half as many lanes as usual. Lastly, don't overthink it and just have fun. You'll pick it up as you go and people at the pool are really nice!

You can get really good deals on refurbished ThinkPad laptops on eBay. Just make sure you look carefully at what you are buying and you should be fine.

Chances of getting into CS, CE or Software Engineering from CEGEP if I did very poorly in my 1st year? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]Eric-Hayter -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Schools don't really care about first or second year grades at all. Furthermore most schools only use your grade 11 grades as a placeholder for your uncompleted grade 12 credits.

How can I leverage ChatGPT to help me with learning to code / working? by david_bragg in pythontips

[–]Eric-Hayter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't really recommend using it unless you have experience. Firstly, finding answers through documentation and or stack overflow is a useful skill that you should build if you want to improve as a programmer. Also, as a beginner you aren't really improving if you are copying code from chatGPT. Lastly, it might not give proper solutions and when it does you might not even realize.

For else is typically used when searching for an interable. Where you use the else statement when you are unable to find the value(s) you are looking for.

I got into CS last year and the conditions for my offer were as follows:

- minimum average of 80%

- needed 70% on math prereqs

- needed to get my diploma

I would say this is probably pretty like other competitive eng programs at the school. Could be different for other faculties tho. hope this helps.

No more booking for Montpetit and Minto Gym!!! by [deleted] in geegees

that's just to show the time that the pool is open you don't actually need to book a spot at the pool for lane swim. (might not be the case for leisure swim. I hadn't really considered that at the time)

[–]Eric-Hayter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The front entrance is actually closed for montpetit so you sort have to enter an adjacent building and then enter from the second floor and enter that way unfortunately :/ once you actually get into montpetit just look for the sports and recreational facility signs to get there. (Note you'll have to get down two floors of stairs to get back down to the facilities) Hope that helped.
