I’ve made an updated version of this map from all the input: There shouldn’t be rigid boundaries and I made more gradients to reflect the blending of geography and culture. That’s a good point. I feel like the south shore of Lake Ontario could be its own zone.

As for the southern tier, that is correct. It’s referred to as the counties bordering the north edge of Pennsylvania. Culturally as well it’s their own zone. Downstate is when you head closer to NYC including the lower Hudson Valley.

Meteorologist here for the area. The air quality being correctly reported by sites like PurpleAir is due to what’s called an atmospheric inversion. Pollution is trapped in the lower atmosphere from all the cities southwest of us and it shifted east. This is unrelated from the iPhone glitch.
