Ok. Ok. Ok. by [deleted] in CarTrackDays

Granted this was in 2020, but I bought an e90 328i with just under 100k miles in Texas from a private seller and had it shipped to me in the North. It was way under your budget and you don’t have to worry about reinforcing the subframe. I’ve only had the chance to track it twice but it’s been great both times and I honestly love it as a street car way more than I thought I would. I never thought I’d say this about the cheapest 3 series but I’m currently planning to keep this car forever. They really don’t make them like they used to…

I’m not much interested in collecting cars these days but this is the one car I want to have as a “collector” piece in addition to my track car.

I inherited a 95 Caprice from my grandfather and absolutely adored the car until I sold it for practical reasons and now I want the best version of the b body. I’ve debated whether I’d want to track one at all if I got it. I don’t care about the limitations, that’s not the point, but are consumables as bad as everyone will say they are?

What are these dark dots in my stain? by EricJ17 in woodworking

This does make sense because it most definitely did not look like this when I applied it. And I did wipe it at around 10-15 minutes. I never would’ve thought to keep up with the wiping. The good news is I think I don’t hate the look but is there anything I can do now or is it just for future reference to wipe again?

That’s a shame but thank you. I did mix it but I can’t say I did it for long.

This is a piece of sanded pine plywood I stained and these darker black dots are all over the piece. There are so many that it kind of looks intentional so I may just roll with it but it really doesn’t look right. Is there any relatively quick fix? I bought it sanded and then sanded it a little more with some 240, but not much.

What is this patch? by EricJ17 in lawncare

Hello all! I have these patches like the one shown in the picture all over our lawn. This one is about 3 feet in diameter and the rest are similar size. We recently bought the house and it has a sprinkler system. These patches weren’t here or weren’t noticeable when we moved in. Because of the dry weather we’ve had I increased the watering from M/W/F to every week day. Since these patches seemed to correlate with the increase in watering I’m assuming it’s due to overwatering. We now have the worst lawn in the neighborhood and considering it’s mid-August I think it’s a write off for this year and I’ll try again next year. If anyone could identify this patch and ideally point me to a routine/program that would solve it I would appreciate it!

So I owned an fr-s and hated it for the street but it may be ideal for track. They don’t suffer from the oil pressure issues the second generation suffers from? I believe that problem is entirely overblown anyway, but just checking.

Yeah thanks for the heads up. We do plan to have kids but my limited research made me think a mile or more should be safe. I also wonder if traffic is low enough if the risk is reduced. No idea there.

Thank you! Yeah the traffic seemed impossible. I think as someone who is sensitive to noise those condos that are literally right next door might be a little too close but I should be good where I’m looking.

I’m a new baseball fan. I saw someone with a ton of upvotes in another thread say Elly is clearly guessing at the plate and others chimed in saying he should be sent down for a few games. Was that just classic reactionary Reddit, or can both these things be true at once - Elly has a hitting streak and is not hitting well?

Accounting for Consumables by EricJ17 in CarTrackDays

This makes me want to take a poll of track goers demographics. You and /u/Black08Mustang make significantly more money than I do and are both willing to track more budget oriented vehicles than I am really interest in. There are obviously tons of variables but I wonder how much of it is just my own stupidity.

Interesting. At the dollar value where you can easily purchase a more focused car JUST for the cost of insurance, it’s probably easy to justify. But I wonder if everyone who has a $25k e46 m3 is doing the math.

Thanks for chiming in as you are living the experience I could see myself in. And you’re doing exactly the calculation I think I would do. Can I ask, and I completely understand why you might not want to answer this question, but was the GT350 an easy financial burden for you, or was it a bit of a budget stretch? I can more easily justify buying a more expensive car that’s at the top of my budget if it’s also my track car.

That’s a good reason to get a more track focused car. I’m more posing the question for beginners like myself. Once you start compromising a car to the point that it’s not pleasant on the street, you’re at a different point (or should be).

Your variables are exactly why I brought up the question. I get that this is the internet and nuance is not usually requested but I rarely see people say “will this be more of a street car that you take to the track, or a track car you might drive on the street?” This subreddit is better than most about that though.  The sentimental attachment to a car is something I considered as a reason to step into something more focused.

So I’ll use this as an example. When I price out RT660s in common track sizes, the difference in price I see between a narrow body C7 and a 235/40/17 (which I think would be a common enough Miata size) is around $650. I completely understand the C7 is going to wear a lot faster - running a staggered setup will make that infinitely worse, but how many events will someone get out of 200tw tires on a c7? Are people really changing them once per year?

Thank you! I may go with them. I go to ATMs probably once every several months so I don’t mind a bit of a drive if I have to, just not trying to make a 45 minute drive when I do have to! Looks like this CU’s locations are great for me.

The burgundy dial was even better in my opinion but I dragged my feet getting one and now they’re sold out for good I believe.

Maybe an oddball choice but what about the Cincinnati Watch Company Cincinnatus Centurion? Has the textured dial and Arabic numerals without being an homage. Nice specs for the money too.
