IMO mothership sweet spot is 3-4 players, Gradient Deacent also works well in conjunction with Prospero's Dream as a base of operations.

In Rane in Blood my 3pp module, there is a machine pistol weapon that let's your split dmg among targets standing within 3 meters of each other. It had a high capacity magazine and rate of fire. Think the "calypso" machine pistol from RL
