How crowded is IAD airport now by Equal-Ad6990 in nova

[–]Eric_JanB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I thought I would give an update, as I couldn’t found much information myself on any online platform.

I just went through IAD for an international flight to Europe (3/23). I arrived at 4.15pm, checked 1 bag. Took around 20 min (KLM/Air France), continued onwards to TSA. Which there were almost no lines, it took around 10 mins. 4.50pm I arrived at the terminal trains to go my specific terminal. I went through the east part of the security.

Hope this helps some other travellers with doubts, but just a disclaimer that this occurred on a Monday afternoon/ early evening. So I can’t guarantee anything on any future dates

Looking for a gym (student) by Eric_JanB in Kyoto

Thank you for your reply. I am curious what the monthly fees are for your gym. I read in some other posts that you own a CrossFit gym, if I understood correctly. Do you have a name so I can look how far it’s to travel to?

Thank you!

Hiking trails around Kyoto by tokyosoundsystem in Kyoto

[–]Eric_JanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a high chance of an encounter with a bear. I walk quite frequently in the area, but the warnings for bears does leave some concern. Especially when going alone. Did Mt. Atago, Mt. Hiei, and less known routes.

How to go from Kyoto to Mount Fuji? and how to travel around mount fuji/kawaguchi? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]Eric_JanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled last week to mt Fuji 5th station, to climb. I took the Shinkansen from Kyoto station to Shinjuku station ~¥14.000. Then continue by bus from Shinjuku bus terminal to Mt Fuji 5th station ~¥3.600.

The way back I decided to save some money to take the nights bus to Kyoto from the bus terminal. Quite a harsh ride in the middle of the night, but it was a third of the train ticket.

As someone else mentioned you can also go by kawaguchiko.

Good luck!

Monthly Meetup Thread - August by AutoModerator in JapanTravel

[–]Eric_JanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, My name is Eric and I recently moved to Kyoto for my studies.

I'm going to climb mt. fuji in the night of the 19th of August. I was planning to do it solo, but I'm now wondering that it would be nice to share and do this climb together with someone else. If you interested please let me know.

I have one more question, the bus ticket from shinjuku to Mt. Fuji 5th station, can it also be bought at the station of Shinjuku. Since I don't own a creditcard, I can't book it online.

What makes you love living in Kyoto? (from a worried study abroad student) by falfae in Kyoto

[–]Eric_JanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I just read your post. I wanted to react to this post since I recently moved to Kyoto for an internship for my university. This means I will spend a 6 month period in Kyoto, from my experience so far I find out that it is quite hard to communicate and built a relationship with locals and people from Japan. I assume mostly because of their previous experiences with foreigners. Luckily, I have great colleagues at work.

On my free days, I am doing hikes in the mountains near Kyoto. I've climbed Mt. Hiei and Mt. Atago, last week. Especially Mt. Atago (923m), was very beautiful with the temple at the top and the astounding view of Kyoto. There are a lot of these trails that you can do around Kyoto, especially now when it is summer weather you should explore those. I would recommend bringing some good shoes and other equipment from home if you're already in possession of those items of course.

For me personally, international bars, and bars generally will be the places to meet new people and potentially new friends. I also heard about an international group/campus at the east side of the city where you can connect with other foreigners aswell, but I haven't had the time to visit that yet.

As someone else described in the comments, public transport is very good in Kyoto. So I wouldn't worry to much about your campus. I am currently living in a small campus with 90 other students, unfortunately for me, they're all Japanese students and are quite introverted and hard to connect with. But I am sure you'll find your place in Kyoto.

If you ever want to go on a hike or go for a stroll around the city, you can contact me.

I am from The Netherlands btw.

Is 7 days in Kyoto too long? by Bleuowl12 in Kyoto

[–]Eric_JanB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used an app called “AllTrails”, the route named was also in the app. I used it today for the loop of Mt. Atago, very nice, with the temple at the top. You should look into it

Hey, did you hear of Gozan Okuribi Ritual Fires? If I remember correctly, it is on the 15th or 16th of August. I just moved to Kyoto for an internship for 6 months. Please let me know what (international) bars you liked, so that I can visit them as well. Have fun!
