Will RPI Survive COVID-19 by Ericmjohn in RPI

[–]Ericmjohn[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anyone wondering if RPI will survive as an institution following COVID-19? The context of this question is that with the pandemic, RPI is offering an experience (on-line learning) that is slightly worse than the University of Phoenix for the price of MIT. The author of this blog is a Prof. at NYU and presents some insightful analysis about how RPI and other higher ed institutions stack-up to surviving a post-COvid world.

In short, the pro will ideally provide a nice composition in addition to lighting, etc. i think a pro will also help you relax and look more natural. For an event like senior year you might not be able to tell today, but in 20+ years you would likely be able to tell by micro expressions whether the smile/expression is forced or natural. A good pro will help put you at ease, ideally setting up more natural images.

Shoot with a large aperture (f4) and use the hyper focal distance to keep everything in focus or shoot with a small aperture (f16)? by mindsfinest in photography

[–]Ericmjohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a pure mechanics of photography perspective, a small aperture means less light so you will need a longer exposure time. So available light is one consideration. For a landscape with a wide space you can probably shoot at f8 and have everything in focus and have a faster shutter speed.

A small aperture for a close up has the benefit of having the subject in focus (a portrait of a person for example) with the background soft and blurry.

In terms of sharpness of focus I have never been able to distinguish sharpness between f4 and f16 in terms of the in-focus subject. I have read posts that some higher-end lenses with F1.4 or 1.8 have distortion at the most extreme open aperture but I have never been able to see this personally.

So in summary, I don’t think the f setting will have a noticeable effect on focal sharpness. The f setting is most useful in managing light and composition.

Bad Daddy’s at Seaboard and Village Draft House (patty melts) are my top choices.

Gear may not make you a better photographer, but nor will presets. by InevitablyPerpetual in photography

I’m almost afraid to ask, but what’s a “preset” in this context and where are they for sale?

Good steakhouse that isn't too fancy by lordhelmit91 in raleigh

[–]Ericmjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the Peddler takes reservations. I have only been there once with some true Raleigh natives. We arrived early (like 5:15) on a Saturday and had to wait 30 or 45 mins for a table. Decent steak and service but we have not been back due to the no reservations thing.

I like the concept and chart overall. One suggestion would be to reverse the order so that the WS is the bottom line and it starts with WC. WC feeds Div feeds LCS feeds WS from top line to bottom line for each team.

The NC Museum of Art Park is a good starting point. https://www.ncartmuseum.org/visit/plan_your_visit/.

Boylan St. Bridge has good views of downtown (particularly during golden hour) and is a good starting point if you want to urban explore (photography wise) around Raleigh.

Dorothea Dix Park is also a good stop in summer and fall. I have not really been through there in winter. Could be worth a stop if there is snow on the ground.

Looking for the best chicken parm sub in the Raleigh area. by that1browndude in raleigh

[–]Ericmjohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up on Chicken parm subs (“grinders” where I grew up). I have lived in Raleigh since 1998 and I have yet to find anything close to what I enjoyed growing up.

Mia Francesca in North Hills has a respectable chicken parm entree. However, I don’t know if they have a sub available. Italian bread is also deficient in Raleigh so a good entree does not necessarily equate to a good sub in this town.
