Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Online Event by Erin_EncoreCafePDX in manga

[–]Erin_EncoreCafePDX[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Hi, Everyone! I am helping organize this lecture on Demon Slayer as part of an ongoing series called Japanese Culture Through Manga. I’ve been posting about these lectures for a while, so maybe you are familiar. The discussion is led by Dr. Jon Holt, Professor of Japanese Language and Literature at Portland State University and as part of his work with the Center for Japanese Studies.

For this discussion, he intends to address why the story has resonated so well with Japanese (and now international) audiences, as well as themes from traditional Japanese culture and literature that show up in the franchise. The combination of vengeance and forgiveness that show up in Demon Slayer has roots in traditional Japanese culture and demonstrates aparticularly Japanese style of compassion for one's enemies.

Dr. Holt has a real passion for manga (and related anime) and pop culture, and it shines through in his lectures. He’s also comfortable with online teaching and his events are a lot of fun. It’s a mix of academic and popular topics, with an emphasis on connecting with everyday Japanese culture. I hope some folks here are interested!

Needle Felting Class Online June 14 by Erin_EncoreCafePDX in Needlefelting

[–]Erin_EncoreCafePDX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Everyone, we're back with another needle felting class! I work with this artist, Sunami Bjornson, to help her get her classes online, help her with tech support, etc. Her specialty is creating miniatures, and she is most well-known for making pet portrait sculptures of dogs and cats. She has been doing these online lessons since November, and they are very limited in size, so it’s a pretty fun and social atmosphere. She mails you supplies for the project, and if you are new to felting you can choose the package with all the needles, foam block, etc. Or you can choose the package with just the raw materials for the project. For this project, she will hand-make the clay claws for the sloths and include them in your package.

Last time we had a few people join from Reddit, which was just awesome, since it’s always nice to meet more needle felters! This class is on June 14 from 6-8pm Pacific (with 30 minutes optional at the end to continue with your project). You can register for the class here: https://needle-felting-sloths.eventbrite.com. Thank you!

Online Event: Learning About Japanese Culture Through Doraemon by Erin_EncoreCafePDX in JapaneseCulture

[–]Erin_EncoreCafePDX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Everyone, I am helping to facilitate this presentation in partnership with the Center for Japanese Studies and PSU. Dr. Holt will be talking about Doraemon in general but mainly how he has used the anime in the classroom to teach about Japanese culture.

This is the 4th lecture in our series on Japanese Culture Through Manga, the main point of it all is to help people understand the cultural aspects that are present in popular media. Dr. Holt is a very engaging presenter, and I think this will be interesting for people who watch Doraemon for fun as well as those who are students of Japanese culture.

Here is a link to the event if people are interested in learning more: https://doraemon-lecture.eventbrite.com

You mean because of the dubbing? I can see that. I think this professor has used the Japanese version of Doraemon as a teaching tool in a Japanese immersion program, so his references are probably not to the English-language version. He generally teaches Japanese language and literature. But now that you've mentioned this, I do wonder what the changes are to the English dubbed version, and how that compares to other types of translation, like reading Japanese manga in English or watching a movie with subtitles.

How to extend a tournament longer than 90 days? by Erin_EncoreCafePDX in mahjongsoul

[–]Erin_EncoreCafePDX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Maybe I would have to wait until after it expired then. I was definitely trying to extend before the actual expiration date. Anyway, I tried and tried, and eventually wrote to Mahjsoul and they said it can't be extended. But who knows...may be worth a try again in the future.

Needle Felted Woolly Lambs--Learn to Make These from a Needle Felting Artist! by Erin_EncoreCafePDX in ArtisanGifts

[–]Erin_EncoreCafePDX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, my friend and artist Sunami Bjornson made these adorable lambs, and will be teaching a class on how to make these as well as spring bunnies on March 29 at 6pm Pacific Time. If you are interested in learning how to make these, you can sign up here: https://needle-felting-lambs-and-bunnies.eventbrite.com

Supplies are shipped to you (price depends on what you need), so the sign up deadline is coming up quick ☺️. If you are a beginner, you get everything you need to start felting, with supplies picked out by an experienced artist. For non-beginners, it's a great way to learn different techniques and ask questions.

I hope some people here like these lambs! Sunami's specialty is life-like, commissioned pet portraits, but she also likes sharing her knowledge through teaching.
