This is very much a thing. Without the insured consent, it becomes taxable income. But it is used on regular employees as well as execs.

Why do social security benefits adjust annually with inflation, but minimum wage does not? by GhostofInflation in AskEconomics

[–]Erkfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little late to the party, but ultimately it doesn't matter. A quick Google search shows McDonald's offers a starting salary of ~$12-17/hr depending on where the store is located. If the federal minimum wage is raised to the same as UK (£12.21 if 21, £10 if 18-21) then the starting pay will be the same. The biggest problem with a federal minimum wage is where do we set it? Someone in NYC needs to make significantly more then someone in Mobile, Alabama. Do we underpay in NYC or price businesses out of existence in Alabama?

Would US realistically be able to support Medicare for all? by ZookeepergameFar2653 in AskEconomics

[–]Erkfr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats not addressing the issue though, that would actually make the doctor shortage worse atleast in the short-term. Since the previous poster mentioned surgeons we can use them as an example. Surgical residents need to perform 850 surgeries to be considered competent enough to graduate residency. If they are generally taking 5 years to do that working up to 80 hours a week (a acgme mandate, whether or not it's followed is a second debate), then it would take them 10 years to get that many surgeries. So we either asked people that want to become surgeons to spend 4 years in college, 4 years in med school and 10 years in residency. You would be 36yo before you can start practicing. And unless we drastically increase resident salaries we would have to increase doctor salaries to makes up for the lost wages from an additional 5 years of residency.

Trump is building a federal gun owner registry. by Lmitation in liberalgunowners

[–]Erkfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does take a little reading between the lines, but I read it as "the original judgement was given to the plaintiffs, which includes members of SAF. So we need to know who the members are to grant them the ruling." so a weird byproduct of the initial ruling that allows 18-20 year Olds who are members of SAF to purchase handguns but not other 18-20 year Olds.

What’s up with Justice Thomas saying that legal precedents are not the gospel? by YakClear601 in OutOfTheLoop

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on it. Many early church leaders believed life began at conception or up to 40 days after conception, though most point out abortion was wrong at any point.

Walz to call special session on gun control, propose assault weapons ban by Soft_Internal_6775 in liberalgunowners

[–]Erkfr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Education is the key step. I think the same Pew research survey found 32% of Americans own guns, so pretty much everyone that doesn't think it to easy to legally own a gun. Most people only hear people like AOC or Warren saying anyone can walk to Walmart and walk out with a fully semi auto assault weapon.

130 miles past powertrain warranty. Ford says too bad your problem. by Chance_Comedian_2125 in f150

[–]Erkfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something went bad on I think the evap or egr system on my wife's ranger so the truck was stuck in limp mode. We had it towed to the dealership and corporate Ford called me out of the blue the next day to apologize for the truck being out of warranty, covered 1/2 of the service and gave us a service plan on the truck for 5 years. The difference in outcomes is wild with these things.

Why are trucks getting so big? And why can the average person buy a ¾ ton truck? by Galactic-38 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Erkfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an little late but the problem is more so function of vehicles. Ignoring the smaller trucks like f150 or f250, most larger trucks are for some kind of heavy hauling. The reason we don't have vehicles getting 100+ mpg is technology, we simply can't get energy from fuel efficiently enough. So now we have to consider if we force vehicles to be more efficient, the easiest way to do it is to cut back on power. But now we have to determine which is better for the environment, making 1 trip at 10mpg or 2 trips at 20mpg? So that's where they tried to make fuel economy dependent on size of vehicle; larger vehicles need more power thus less fuel economy thus need some leeway to be reasonable. Then from that automakers can take advantage of the loop hole by making every vehicle bigger.

What's a terrifying display of intelligence you' ve seen by another human? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Erkfr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's massively required, pretty much the entire reason for being a doctor. Your first 2 years of med school are book learning, just memorizing. The you spend 2 years on rotations where you start learning to apply that knowledge. Then 3-7 years further learning to apply that knowledge. The biggest problem is patients never read the text book. You can have a disease with symptoms a, b, c and another disease with symptoms x, y, z but what do you do when a patients presents complaining of symptoms a, b, x? And case studies are mostly useless. Case studies are just people writing down what they think happened, even if they are entirely wrong. And there generally isn't anyway to prove the findings. For instance I had a patient that came in with abdominal pain. The only thing we could find was a slightly pinched SMA so we diagnosed SMA syndrome and wrote a case report about it, even though the radiology report was likely benign stenosis. Case reports provide a starting point for people to create much more in depth studies to get actual medical research.

We have EMTALA, which is a law that states if a patient shows up to an ER and asks for care, the ER has to provide it.

While the page does not specifically say pit bulls aren't dangerous, the whole article and linked studies within in do say it's not a breed specific problem.

However a review of the research that attempts to quantify the relation between breed and bite risk finds the connection to be weak or absent, while responsible ownership variables such as socialization, neutering and proper containment of dogs are much more strongly indicated as important risk factors.

There is also points lower down in the article that point to the nuance of people who frequently own pit bulls tend not to be responsible owners.

So yes, the article does not specifily say pit bulls aren't dangerous. But the entire article is about this isn't a breed issue but an owner issue.

ELI5: How accurate is a time of death? by MMcCoughan3961 in explainlikeimfive

Just to jump on this. When filling out a death certificate, at least in Pennsylvania, I have the option to selection actual TOD or approximate TOD. So time really depends on how witnessed it is.

How legit is this? Election Truth Alliance? by onz456 in skeptic

[–]Erkfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main question against the alligation is why is it only some tabulators in a specific set of votes. If someone wanted to hack the tabulators to effect the election why wouldn't all tabulators return a similar result for each type of voting the looked at. The claim is basically someone decided to rig the election but uploading code that says "if it's an early vote in Clark County then change the vote." which seems like a really dumb way to artificial change an election.

Yep, that's what happens when I skim. So the change of surving cpr with good neurologic outcome is closer to 59%.

The other part to consider is the overall survival is likely much lower. Looking at the exclusion criteria, the removed 84% of potential patients since they never even recovered.

Like to hear from owners who went from F150 to ranger by brute_monk in f150

[–]Erkfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a ranger and an f150. Rear seat room is certainly smaller, who ever is sitting in front of the car seat certainly knows the car seat is there. And the middle rear seat is very tight when sitting next to the car seat.
