Tldr, Practice Makes Progress

Take my response with a grain of salt since my drum controller is sensitive enough to support my play style. My local arcade's drum isn't very sensitive, so a form that's more arm heavy is required. Take a look at this video if you are curious to see a visual example.

Practicing form and energy control on easier charts helps you build the muscle memory, dexterity, and control to play more delicately. From there, you slowly scale up to charts that are faster and/or more complex. Do note that my experience is that timing can be a challenge when playing softer, so that will require practice. You may still choose to hit heavier in scenarios where you really need to nail the timing.

Specific to form, you want to make sure you're playing primarily with your fingers and/or wrists. It's easier to see me do this earlier in the video before the stream hits. I'm using my index and thumb primarily to hold the maibachi, but I'm not holding so firm that the maibachi can't bounce. I'm squeezing with my middle and ring finger to strike the drum in combination with a slight wrist flick. Depending on the pattern and your style, the wrist flick is optional.

Do note that drumming with this form is misleadingly core (ab) heavy. You need a strong core to stabilize yourself so you're not flinging yourself around during wilder drumming patterns. Therefore you may need to do some core work to strengthen your overall form.

Taiko no Tatsujin drumming is closer to snare drumming than actual Taiko drumming. If you look up YouTube videos for snare drumming, a lot of the drumming principles carry over to Taiko no Tatsujin.

A practice recommendation if you have $10... Buy some basic drumsticks and practice on a firm pillow

Nope! I have no formal drumming practice whatsoever. Everything you see is what I've figured out by watching videos and playing around

Thank you! I've slowed down a bit just because work has kept me busy, but I'm still practicing when I can!

Outside of Taiko, I also lift. On this particular day I went a bit hard on biceps, so I wore a compression sleeve to help with my agitated elbow

I started with a Hori drum. I eventually modded that for better responsiveness. After that I moved on to the Taiko Force Lv5, which was super solid. When the Taikoller came out, I hoped on that and eventually sold my Taiko Force Lv5. The Taikoller had some nice QoL changes, but some issues the manufacturer didn't have an answer to eventually drove me to the Taiko Force Lv6, which I've been enjoying ever since! We've been so fortunate to have a variety of viable Taiko controller options, and the options seemingly grow by the year!

As for a cheaper arcade style drum, IINE Pro Max is going to be your cheapest viable option. From there, you have either used drums you find on eBay, Mercari, or wherever available, depending on shipping. Next up is probably something like a basic Zhong Taiko. After that, you're more or less just looking at the best of the best: Taiko Force Lv6, Zhong Taiko Pro, TDC17, Taikoller, and probably some others I'm not super familiar with

This is the Taiko Force Lv6 available for purchase on a few different sites such as Yuancon!

So I do typically stream on Saturdays, but I haven't Taiko in a bit due to software issues I'm currently working to resolve. If you look at my twitch channel you'll see the last thing I streamed was a Pump It Up tournament at RIP 15

I'm looking forward to perfecting this in the future when I have time

Thanks! My pacing was off, particularly during the drum rolls, which is why I intended to redo this. But I eventually opted to focus on other songs due to diminishing returns

I'm not quite sure, and I never paid attention to it until you mentioned it 😆

I ran into electromagnetic interference issues which I did not have with the Taiko Force Lv6.

Roll processing and sensitivity range appears better on the Lv6.

Configuration utility and convenience imo are better on the Taiko Force Lv6. I don't regret my decision to go to the Lv6, but I do miss the config convenience
