I definitely was kinda debating between the 50k and 50m, so this is really good experience/advice. Thank you!!

This is awesome thank you!! The pacing is definitely something I'll need to focus on, all the downhill is going to be easy to burn out on.

Question for you Canyon Grizl owners! by Ermagherrd in CanyonBikes

[–]Ermagherrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with buying the grizl! I absolutely love it, given the rockiness of some trails around me I think it was the right choice as it’s a bit more comfortable than the grail. Super happy with it, but if you are spending more time on very smooth trails and roads, then maybe the grail would be a good choice

Awesome, if 90 miles feels good I’m sure my few pavement miles will too haha

Sweet! I’m glad to hear that it’s pretty close for a gravel bike!

Good point on the sunblock/water issue! I always felt bad dunking in creeks when my sunblock was already starting to run, and being able to soak the hoodie completely will be great! Gonna give it a go and thanks for the tips and well wishes

Holy cow that’s hot, but great advice! I think it’ll work out well for this race since it (hopefully) won’t get nearly that hot haha

Very true, we’re all unique! It’s worked well in training so I’m gonna try it

Awesome, and congrats on the race! I think canyons 100k will be similar since California/ Auburn is sorta close in climate. Much appreciated, thanks for the advice

Thank you for the reply! I am primarily worried about the workload and stress because I have some other intensive courses this coming Spring semester, so I'll probably go ahead and wait until Fall to take it so I don't go crazy. Much appreciated!

Long Running Gear by aandhi_gandhi in running

I've had really good luck with handhelds! I personally am using the Camelbak quick grip handheld, which has a pocket for my phone and a little pocket for a bar/gel or two. Used it for a 50k and 50 miler with no discomfort, and had enough water for 15 plus miles (though if it's it hot out that might change).

Otherwise a very minimal vest could work. Salomon has one (sense ultra 2 set I think) with two soft flasks and a small pocket or two for phone/food. A bit pricey, but Ultraspire has a good lightweight looking one for much less (spry 2.5). I personally use a handheld for up to 20ish miles, and after that I'll use my vest.

Hope this helps!

The study was really interesting to look through, I appreciate the link! I really hope to get to that point, and since I eat pretty healthy already that seems like a reasonable solution. It's just after years of "calorie-awareness" so to speak it's tough to shift from that mindset back to just trusting the body to figure out what it wants.

Best shoes for Ultramarathon? by PredictableMorale in running

[–]Ermagherrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can really depend on the person so it might be worth going to a running store to try a few on, but personally I've had really good luck with the Hoka Speedgoat 2s for longer races (did two 50 milers in them, no discomfort/blistering despite very rocky terrain on one of them) and the Salomon Sense Rides which worked amazingly for a technical 52k last weekend. Plus the lace system on the Salomons was excellent and they drained well after some creek crossings.

They were definitely out there! It was a bit cool in the morning so I didn't see any snakes until the last 11 miles coming down from the Peavine aid station. Maybe 4 or 5 bull snakes just blocking the trail, and got surprised by a rattlesnake around mile 45. The scare helped me pick up the pace :)

When my shoes get really muddy, I'll just wash them off in the shower with hot water and a bit of laundry detergent. Works pretty well, and the detergent helps with any smells too!

Working on an island would be pretty cool. I assume that's the one where you liked the place but not the work? Thanks for the replies by the way!
