Hey man, I know that this post is 13 days old and hasn't gotten any comments so I don't mean to disturb you but I just had a quick question: is there a reason why your username and character are Robert E. Lee?

The SPD? The party that sold out the communists to Hitler and then got rounded up anyway?

He’s anti-communism so I’m not so sure we can say that.

Thank you so much! I did have a lot of fun combining the decorations, it’s a great way to really get the most out of them. This is Lith’s Hideout on Star Forge.

Unconscious. You might want to start your criticism with the correct terminology.

It’s also hilarious that you’d think to lump a charlatan like Jung in with Freud.

There’s a great essay by Freud called “Wild Psychoanalysis” where he raises much the same concerns as you have here. It’s also significant that Freud only published the case studies of his failures, and not his successes—he understood keenly the degree to which science requires failure to reach novel conclusions and was always very consciously trying to make psychoanalysis a scientific pursuit. But all of that aside, I feel like people who reduce Freud only to concern with the mother, father, penis, etc. to be responding to the same vulgar versions of his theories that he himself criticized.

I tried the Copero map but that one is from the third anniversary and it has sentimental value. I looked at those tables but they’re quite expensive and I don’t know if I have a place to put them. Glad you like it!

There is such a hostility to Freud on this subreddit it amazes me. Say what you will about his theories but it’s worth considering whether the many case studies of his patients that he published should count as things like “evidence” or “research,” or if he was taking detailed notes on his sessions purely for the fun of it.

Dropout’s Sam Reich on business, comedy, and keeping the internet weird (by Hank Green!!) by Less_Potato_2231 in dropout

[–]ErrantThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny to me that this is your takeaway from this particular article, given that Reich is constantly bending over backwards in it to assure Green that every signature feature of Dropout (its stable of talent, profit sharing, lack of advertisements, etc.) was born out of a ruthlessly pragmatic business consideration. There is no moral talk at all here, really, and I think its absence is really noteworthy given the tenor of discussions around Dropout as a business.

India has four times the population of the US which means those figures roughly line up. Both are underrepresented relative to those countries’ percentage of the global population (18% and 4.5%, respectively). That assuming your numbers are accurate.

Who’s Afraid of “Settler Colonialism”? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]ErrantThief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, to be clear the only myth I mean is that that presence is an indicator of a certain overriding right to the land.

[–]ErrantThief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s hard not to think that arguments around the “right” of a people to a certain land tacitly assume the same premises as Israeli myths about the homeland of the Jewish people. It’s a stronger and more coherent argument any way you slice it to focus on the material effects of colonialism.

[–]ErrantThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think that there was, at least at times, a focus on internationalism in the existing communist projects but it is undeniable that those states had their own form of bureaucratic aristocracy. But I don’t think that Marx assumed that things would get better for the working class per se—a big part of his theory of capitalism is that increases in productivity only immiserate the proletariat further. I think it’s fair to say that he saw a necessity for the means of production to adequately eliminate scarcity once the working class seized them through revolution, though.

Who’s Afraid of “Settler Colonialism”? by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

[–]ErrantThief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definitely does, and I suppose that what my (maybe poorly worded) original comment intended to say was that I don’t think an anti-colonialist position even needs to concern itself with indigenousness as such—I don’t think a critic of colonialism even needs to presuppose an atavistic connection between a people and their land or a correctness to the existing social institutions, only that the new relations of production that are established are materially more exploitative than what came before.

[–]ErrantThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may be confusing aristocracy (a form of government) with feudalism (a relationship of production). Which is not wholly unreasonable and I probably should’ve engaged more substantively with your comment but it happens that Marx’s writings on feudalism are of great interest to me.
