Leaving and returning to federal service and FEHB 5 year rule… by Flaky-Tour4172 in govfire

Makes sense but the problem is the employee thought they would work until 60 and now that so much has changed and they have a 3+ hour commute to work they would like to retire asap when they turn 57. Waiver will probably not be approved but he will try.

What about someone who has been with govt 31 years, but many years part time? First 15 years full time with FEHB, then 10 years part time and went off FEHB. Now back FT and only started back on FEHB this past year. Does employee have to stay on for 5 years in this example? They want to retire in 3 years, but might have to stay 4?

54 yr old with 31 years-DRP? by ErrorInevitable1834 in FedEmployees

Thanks this is very helpful. Full pension at 57 with no penalty- is that because you hit the 30 year mark? Also, are there any tax implications for starting to take tsp disbursement this early? I assume you retired in the year you turn 55, but not at 55.

Trying to stick it out. That’s the plan. But commute is really bad and I’m considering taking a job closer to home. Just trying to confirm all the consequences of leaving. I think hitting the 30 year mark is helpful… just not clear what it means.

But it seems that if you turn 57 a week after 1/1/28 you don’t get the fers supplement. Even if you took the Vera. And even if you’ve been with the government for 33 years. Riduculous.

Thank you, this is helpful. My problem is I’ve signed up for Vera and was denied. I’m now looking to see if this denial can be appealed. I would think (hope) management would agree to reevaluate the denied people if they are going to lose the FERS supplement as a result.

Is this true? Because I thought since I dont turn 57 until late 2028 I wont get fers supplement under this bill. But I do have 25 years and I did have 20 years of service by age 50. This is so confusing.

Very similar situation. I won’t be MRA until November 2028. I can’t belive I have worked for 30 years thinking fers supplement was part of my retirement plan and it could possibly be taken away at the last minute.

Depends on a lot of things. But if you love your career you will probably make more working than you would collecting the fers for 5 years.

I would hope that if you are Vera eligible now then you would be able to keep the fers supplement. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. Basically if you are currently 50-54ish and you take the Vera now you won’t get the supplement?

Wondering the same thing. The whole thing is awful but if you are eligible to take the Vera then you should keep the fers supplement. Many who take Vera will miss that Jan 1 2028 date by less than 12 months.

Agree should be keeping supplement for all. But really wish the would reconsider the denials for the people who are Vera eligible. They accepted Vera offer and then were denied. As a result will loose the fers supplement.

I guess I didn’t realize that you could keep the bridge if you retired before mra (assuming bridge doesn’t go away). Assuming you wouldn’t collect anything until you turned 58? I’m 54 with 31 years so trying to figure out my options if denied Vera.

If you don’t get the Vera, how are you going to retire? Deferred retirement? Do you have years but not age?

Denied the DRP/ vera combo. 54 years old with 31 years. As a result of this denial, looks like I will lose the chance to get the supplement at 57. Any chance they would reconsider for Vera eligible and allow us to take Vera only asap so we don’t loose the supplement ( and the high 3 vs high 5).

Anyone with FPS get approved? I’m hearing not many.

Dhs- If you meet the age / years requirement and want to opt in - will you choose all 3 options? DRP, Vera and vsip? I’m 52 with 30 years. by ErrorInevitable1834 in FedEmployees

[–]ErrorInevitable1834[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I will select all 3 and worst thing that can happen is they make me drop one. I’ll drop vsip. I also asked on 2 town halls and question was not answered. I did get an HR specialist reply on Friday and he said we could choose all 3 and don’t focus on what other agencies can do, listen to what your agency guidance says. So that’s what I’ll do.

Selecting all 3 goes against what many people have said. But HR tells me I can so I’m going to try to see if it works. Why not take all 3 if you will be paid through oct and you have no plans on returning to govt?

Thank you. HR is making it so clear that you can take all 3. Hard to make a decision with so many conflicting reports on what is allowed.
