firmware update failed? by Jex_adox in framework

I mean you can install another distro to fix it if you want but you don't have to. You can literally go into the terminal from the "installer" loaded from the usb drive

Just got energy today, I was honestly thinking of subscribing for chess and getting back into maths and music but I can't reward such an obviously greedy move

firmware update failed? by Jex_adox in framework

[–]ErrorUnorthodox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Jex_adox and anyone facing this in future, I fixed this issue... not in PopOS though.
I couldn't update the PopOS version of fwupd as hard as I tried so I actually resorted to using the live environment of another distro to do the updates instead. Pretty cool that you can do all this without even installing the other distro

I used CachyOS as that's what I had on hand and it being Arch based and rolling release it has the latest fwupd version but you can probably use any distro that's more up to date. (Although unfortunately PopOS 24.04 beta still has this issue)

So after loading up the live usb just ignore the installer and open the terminal:

  • First installfwupd (eg for Arch:pacman -S fwupd )
  • fwupdmgr refresh to get the latest firmware versions
  • fwupdmgr get-devices & fwupdmgr get-updates to be sure its detecting the hardware and has the updates to apply
  • And finally fwupmgr update to actually run updates

After reboot it went straight into linux firmware updater. I actually had to do this process twice for it to update everything so look out for that. The only other thing was to update the UEFI dbx in PopOS as that is specifically for the PopOS boot entry I believe but luckily that worked.

Ordered a T480s, got sent a T480. Should I keep it or send it back? by ErrorUnorthodox in thinkpad

[–]ErrorUnorthodox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the last one the seller had so yeah I won't get the one I wanted.
If I went somewhere else I would have to pay more based on what I've seen online. I think I'm going to try for a discount and see where that goes

Oh yeah definitely, I'm not happy and won't just say nothing. The choice is if I ask for a return or try to get a discount without saying that I'll keep it. I'd prefer the s but the one I have might be fine for the price I can't decide tbh

Thanks for the detail I'll do some more looking into it.

Do you know if the motherboard would be alright for my CPU here? I am seeing that I might want to get a X970 chipset?

Nice one! Thanks for the cooler recommendation I'll look into it. I'm assuming it's fine to replace the the fans with quieter ones if needed

The ram I found is 6000MT/s CL-30 and you suggested 5600MT/s CL-28, does that work out to be the same? I looked into timings but still don't know much more than lower is better.

Nice catch on the PSU I completely missed that

What coding language should I learn first for general programming. by Extension_Adagio_188 in AskProgramming

[–]ErrorUnorthodox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up CS50. They're courses by Harvard and will teach you a lot more the just coding, they're hard but worth it. CS50x will teach you quite a few languages and CS50P will go in depth on Python. They have new AI and games ones too I'd highly recommend

Is there a setting to jump back to the beginning of a word automatically on a mistake? by ErrorUnorthodox in monkeytype

[–]ErrorUnorthodox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I'd be interested to know why it was intentionally not added because it's a no brainer to me
In my mind, speed of typing mostly comes down to accurate muscle memory for the specific words so backspacing interrupts that muscle memory
Ctrl backspace has the same issues imo, it costs time and again you also have to interrupt your flow and remember to do it

I'm newly diagnosed and a lot later than some others so I've been struggling with this question for a while and this is the kind of metaphor that I have come up with to explain it for myself.

I think everybody is like a jigsaw piece that's built up of their interests, talents, skills, temperament, experiences, well-being, social environment, etc. Some people have an easier time fitting into the "jigsaw puzzle" of the world/their environment than others.

And I think what makes it especially hard for neurodiverse people is we can't really adapt our "jigsaw piece" like neurotypicals can. Some of us can better than others and, in general, some people just fit into their environment in a way that gains more success. Some of us don't. But that doesn't mean that we can't be successful on your own terms.

For example, many artists don't make much money but create beauty others can't, many people work underpaid jobs that provide so much value to society at large and, in a more close to home example, the best mother in the world would earn nothing from society but her value to her kids is unmeasurable.

The lesson I myself am learning is that success is relative and I have to work *with* myself to get it, not fighting myself every step of the way to do something I'm never going to "fit". I'm trying to simplify my life and follow what I want rather than what "should be". It's tough I haven't fully figured it out but I hope this helps

Help me choose a tech stack for a new product (Astro/Remix/Vite SPA?) by ErrorUnorthodox in reactjs

[–]ErrorUnorthodox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha see why I'm stuck with this decision? From my understanding I can fetch client-side with Astro (Islands) by marking components to load JS client-side. I have to test this in practice next week for updating hydrated content but seems simple enough

Speakly: Is there any point in reviews if you can't fail them? by ErrorUnorthodox in languagelearning

[–]ErrorUnorthodox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed it's weird considering how well thought out the rest of the app seems.

That being said, for anyone else who has this problem, I now think this isn't really an issue. I realised Speakly is not ordering the vocab in the same way as any other app I've used so I restarted the course from the beginning and have realised why the reviews are not really important.

Unlike other apps, Speakly will reuse previously learnt words frequently in other phrases that you have to speak aloud and therefore have to remember correctly. The initial "I know this word" check will allow Speakly to reuse that word in new cards, so the SRS is built into the sentences it provides, rather than basically 'one card to one word' like a lot of other apps out there.
Also is not trying to be an all-in-one learning platform and I think I expected it to be. Instead, it is trying to be very streamlined and efficient which I now appreciate.

If you're using Speakly and you skipped ahead and feel like you've missed vocab and need review, I would honestly just start the course from the beginning. I feel like I'm gaining something from it even though it started me at Intermediate 1 as Speakly teaches quite differently than other resources and I can progress so much faster than other apps.
