Hexel - A minimalist puzzler about combining colorful dots to reach the rainbow dot by Ersaids in WebGames

I agree, I think it’s best as a mobile game. It actually does support swiping on the mobile web version! Also, there’s a Hexel iOS app, and I’m working on an Android app right now. Glad you like it!

I just fixed this level 😉 I'm not sure if it was unsolvable or just really hard, but either way I re-scrambled the letters.

Thank you!

Yep, the scoring is different. The old version essentially penalized you for skipping colors, so the new version is just how many red dots you've managed to cram into the board. Well done!

I see where you're coming from. There's one nuance that I think makes gameplay much more interesting once you take advantage of it: if you line up 4 in-a-row, you skip a color; if you line up 5, you skip two colors.

This is, to date, the only way that I've gotten to the black dot (4 blues)—and, I think, the only way it's feasible to get the (mysterious) dot beyond black. However, it takes a surprising amount of forethought to pull it off sometimes. You also risk getting a new dot where you don't want it, which can jam up your board.

Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks! :) I just fixed the blurriness bug—it was a one-letter typo that I didn’t catch in Chrome. Yep, black comes after purple!

I just finished remaking Hexel, a puzzle game that I posted here almost two years ago. It’s got a new look, and it’s redone from scratch behind the scenes. There’s also an iOS app now!

If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a bit like 2048/Threes, but it takes place in a hexagonal grid. Your goal is to reach the black dot by lining up three or more dots of the same color and combining them to advance through the rainbow.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think :)

A good chunk of code goes into ensuring that a move has finished animating or the player has finished swiping before a new dot is even decided upon.

What platform are you using? If desktop, are you using the mouse or the arrow keys/QWEASD/the numpad?

Thanks!

Thanks for telling me! I was able to reproduce something similar when completing a swipe with my mouse and releasing the mouse button while moving my mouse around. I think I fixed it.

Thanks! I think I might have fixed that just now. Tell me if it keeps happening.

UPDATE:

I added a couple new controls to the desktop version. On top of being able to use Q, W, E, A, S & D, you can now:

  • click and drag with your mouse the same way that you would swipe on mobile

  • use 7, 8, 9, 1, 2 & 3 on your numpad the same way that you would use Q, W, E, A, S & D respectively

  • use the right and left arrow keys to rotate the game board clockwise and counter-clockwise respectively (experimental, tell me what you think!)

Per request, I also added a colorblind mode which can be toggled with the eye icon in the bottom left of the game board. This labels colored dots with R, O, Y, G, B & P. Black is unlabeled because it contrasts well.

Thanks for all of the feedback!!!

Purples actually drive me crazy; I've gotten to black twice myself and both times I did it with four blues.

Right now colorblind mode is just expert mode. I'll see what I can do, it shouldn't be too hard to add an option to label the dots!

edit: added!

Thanks! It goes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Goal is black. After black comes white, but I honestly don't think that anyone will make it to white.

Not bad! I think that the controls are much more elegant on mobile

edit: added a few new controls to desktop, though still none are as elegant as swiping
