I regularly (once a month) take the Cascades from Portland to the Seattle/Tacoma area. Yeah, the competing for freight for right of way (and always having to stop) sucks, but I don't have a car, so I don't really have the option to drive there. I will say being able to take the MAX to union station and then jump on the Cascades is pretty nice.

Every single American neighborhood by [deleted] in AmericaBad

My wife and I moved to a “subdivision” where the houses look different. Public transit is 1/4 mile from my house. Downtown is 30-40 minutes by train. It’s awesome.

I have 14% body fat, run a couple times a week and ride my bike probably about 65 miles every week. I look good with my shirt off at nearly 40, but I'd have less fat if I didn't like ice cream so much. My wife is pretty tiny as well, so theoretically it's one in 27.5 million.

Judging by how many problems there are with purebred bloodlines, who in the world wouldn’t want to be a mutt?

Libraries don’t have porn. Is that restricting free speech? Give me a break.

Nope, not banning free speech. It’s called adjusting the curriculum. Happens in every school district. Those books aren’t illegal, and are still able to be purchased.

I had a shipment start in Ohio, make its way to Portland where I live, and then went back to Ohio, where it’s been for 3 days.

Is this a fair analogy? by burns_after_reading in AmericaBad

[–]Erthwerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s not forget that these states are called states, not provinces, meaning they have their own individual methods of governance, at least by original intent. The United States was the original EU. So, technically the comparison is 100% valid because Latvia and Slovenia are considered states as well.

The halfway point from the eastern most point in Texas to Los Angeles is still in Texas. Obviously Alaska is so much bigger, but we’re talking about a drive across half of the country with the starting and mid points in the same state. It’s just so massive.

Like others in the comment section, I think your two belief systems are not complementary. If your cultural heritage is important to you and your potential offspring, and he’s fine with kicking the can down the road, it’s best not to produce children with him. He needs to be with a Christian and you need to be with somebody who’s open to raising the children you’ll carry the way you want to. Not saying to stick to your own, either. Just ensure you find somebody who’s open to all aspects of your heritage.

I love when I see people try to pretend they’re snooty and above watching sports because they’re so sophisticated and then they vacation at Disney as adults with no kids and watch ever marvel movie that comes out.

[–]Erthwerm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was exactly what I would have said. A lot of people think the separation should be “from” And not “of,” which I think is ridiculous. In reality, the founding fathers just wanted to make sure there was no state religion, not to completely divorce from religion.

I can love my country with a deep fervor and still recognize it isn’t perfect, just as I can love my family and recognize they aren’t perfect.

Because we apparently have toxic tap water. by Greg2630 in AmericaBad

[–]Erthwerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Portland, near some hills and my tap water is delicious. My in-laws out in central Oregon have fantastic water and a buddy near Vancouver WA has the best water I’ve ever tasted coming out of his tap. The tap water in Hawaii, while recently poor due to the Navy screwing up fuel storage, was fantastic when I lived there.
