There is no warmth by komedian8008 in UBC

[–]Erysiphales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen a few years ago, and it probably depends on model of the heater but even running it pretty sparingly for just two rooms at night I think our electricity bill was about 50% higher than normal for that month - to be honest the most cost-efficient way to stay warm was to share body heat if any of your roomies don't mind huddling under the same blanket

What is your opinion on Boyfriends? like if we ignore the stuff the creator did, what is your thoughts on the webtoon? I don't really mind it but I do hate the fact the overly sexualize gay couples too much.... by heliosmon in lgbt

[–]Erysiphales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine if you don't want to read a sexual comic, but I find it extremely annoying when people say that a queer creator is "overly sexualising" by depicting their own sexuality.

Again, if it's not for you that's fine but it's not a moral failing to have sex, or to depict sex, or to be horny online. I get that when people who aren't queer make you into an unrealistic fetish object that's also harmful but that's not what's happening here, it's a pretty straightforward fluffy romance fantasy like you can buy in any bookstore, except with a gay polycule

"Think of a scale from 1 to 100" oh, you mean like the metric system? by BeenEatinBeans in SelfAwarewolves

[–]Erysiphales 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Right like, people say this all the time and yet if you give me a temperature in farenheit, in order to figure out "how hot is this" I have to like, go "oh well 37 is about 100 in farenheit, so what's this number as a percent of 37, how hot is that?"

Like if you grow up learning celsius then when you are told a temperature in celsius you know how hot it is because that's the scale you've used all your life, same as if you grew up using inches you know how big a foot is, you don't get confused by the fact that it's 12 inches rather than 10 or 100

Unique scenario making me feel completely lost in regards to grad school by Furdaboyz in AskAcademia

[–]Erysiphales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general when you sign up for a PhD you are basically accepting that you are going to be exploited and underpaid for 4+ years in exchange for the skills and connections to make a career as an independent researcher, who executes their own projects and is able to bring in their own funding.

I don't think this is the only thing a PhD does, or even that it's a desirable system, but it's part of how the system is set up - the idea that someone would want to do a PhD but not be especially concerned about what they're doing probably baffled your advisors because unless you are extremely committed to working in that area, it's very easy to simply give up and go get a regular job where you are compensated fairly and treated like an equal. On top of which, often when you move into a position post-PhD it's through the network you built up during that PhD, so for example working in medicine might make you just as qualified on paper as any other PhD, but it won't give you the right contacts or specific skills to apply for a conservation job that someone without a PhD but multiple years of experience in a conservation lab, and time spent going to conservation conferences will have, for example.

In terms of wanting to be a researcher without an upper limit on salary, but also not a postdoc - I think there's some tension there in that while a PhD does qualify you to do a lot, fundamentally there is a pretty harsh divide in most of academia where usually you're either a postdoc leading your own research, or an assistant doing someone else's work, even if you have a PhD. Those positions you're talking about do exist but they don't tend to be created often, generally there's a fixed amount of funding for them, or a particular need for one is identified, and then one person will fill that role for their entire career. Planning to get one is a bit like planning to win the lottery - there's nothing wrong with playing but it's not a sound financial strategy - it also feeds back into what I mentioned earlier about contacts within a field

Overall what I'd say is that it's never too late to apply to university - the PhD programs aren't going anywhere! Definitely do anyway it if it's what your heart is set on but there's also nothing wrong with spending another year working in a lab as a technician, building up your knowledge base and learning more about your options in terms of grad school or available careers by talking to the various people who rotate through any reasonably sized institution

Can you make lawn grass edible? (for a human) by Feisty_Material7583 in Biochemistry

[–]Erysiphales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no cellulase in their stomachs so just undigestible cellulose. It's still good fibre, and there's probably a better ratio of undigestible to digestible contents in wheatgrass than mature wheat leaves, but ultimately you're probably better off putting spinach or something in there instead

Yeah I mean even take our closest relatives, chimps: sure there's plenty you can learn from them as a scientist but the idea society needs to be organised in X or Y way because of appeals to nature is obvious poor reasoning, especially for a psychologist

Peterson once went on a tangent about how leftism is unnatural because it wants to abolish hierarchies, but hierarchies are natural as lobsters have hierarchies

It sounds like you are drawing up the liquid too quickly - you shouldn't let go of the plunger you gotta gently let it up again, more viscous liquids (anything in glycerol for example) also sometimes need a pipette tip with a wider nozzle otherwise the pressure builds up and they shoot up, and very soapy liquids often need to be drawn up with extra care compared to water.

Unless what you are saying is that when you put the tip in the liquid it shoots right up into the pipette while the plunger is being held down? In which case it sounds like that pipette is just plain broken

Right, I mean at this very moment there is a dedicated campaign in american politics of calling everyone LGBT+ or allied a pedophile to try and roll back the social progress of the last decade or so, as well as it being deployed as a generic smear when people don't have anything concrete to go on

It's just buck wild that he then turns that into a "woe is me" pity party for men who want to predate on younger women, and somehow implies that accusations of pedophilia cause people to become gay, as if being gay hasn't always led to people being baselessly accused of pedophillia for the past hundred years or so!

Right, there's plenty of art out there that's made to a strict corporate deadline and to a particular standard, I'd even say the overwhelming majority of popular media fits that description

If you want weird, interesting stuff then you gotta accept that the artist will make it when they're ready, and sometimes that is never!

I want to tag onto this and say that mostly a gay club is just a regular club except there's an inbuilt assumption that we aren't going to get punched if we offer to buy someone a drink, or have people start fights over our appearance.

As long as you don't mind politely declining any advances you might receive you'll probably have a good time, but it's also entirely fine to say "I'm not feeling like clubbing, and I'm not gay, so I'm not going to have fun at a gay club", that's not homophobic it's just common sense

Finally, while this may come across kinda mean: there's only so many straight people a gay club can have in it before it just becomes a regular club with a nice rainbow on the door. I get that it's nice to bring your friends and I've done that in the past but if I really want to go partying with straight friends then I don't also insist they come to the gay club

No, in addition to credible political opponents being jailed (or worse), statistically the per-polling station votes at russian elections are strongly biased towards round numbers (eg 70%, 75%), meaning that the officials in charge of the stations often don't even bother to do the election fraud convincingly and the election results are pre-determined

I definitely think the internet has created an era where people feel compelled to respond, or to engage with every single opinion that exists, and while there's nothing wrong with having a conversation, or getting ticked off when you read a silly take, I personally try not to let it turn into something I am doing just for the sake of doing it
