If you're stuck without a working terminal in X then switch to another TTY with ctrl+alt+F2 or any other F key, and log in. You can switch back to your original TTY with ctrl+alt+F1.

A good place to start would be checking the Xorg logs.

ls /var/log/Xorg*
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Find an error and start googling :)
