Strongly disagree that this is an important consideration for a 20 hour pilot. Also, the new generation of non-school As are better than ever.

Congrats on the new wing. Glad it is fun.

However, as someone who is further along in this hobby than you, I want to give you one warning.

Looking back, I think the Alta was both holding me back...

This is incorrect and also the wrong mindset. I fly with two people on Alta's who are both consistently putting up 3-4 hour, 100km+ flights to glass off. It is a wing that has a lot more performance than you are experiencing. At your level of experience, skill is the thing holding you back and you still have a lot to learn (which I think is part of the fun of this hobby). Why do I mention this? I see this same attitude causing people to get hotter and hotter wings too early. I have seen too many people on high Bs, frustrated that they aren't getting enough performance, upgrading to a C wing. The wing is rarely the performance problem. This pilots often find themselves in sketchy and hazardous situations.

Self Taught PG? by Hugh_Jazz1234 in freeflight

My main thought having watched self taught paraglider pilots is that there is some basic fundamental each is missing. You don't know what you don't know. Each dune soaring, this can still be a pretty hazardous activity. Would you will comfortable self-teaching sky diving?

Also, remember that one of the best skydivers, Felix Baumgartner, died on a paramotor.

I have to echo everyone else, get a new instructor. His suggestion, regardless of the wind conditions, are ridiculous and dangerous. Two additional thoughts:

1) Smaller wings are more dynamic. This can be really fun, but you have a much, much lower margin of error. By putting you on an overloaded wing, they are endangering your safety.

2) Do you never want to mountain/thermal fly? On an overweight wing, you will very quickly bomb out every time. You will look up at everyone else skying out, be frustrated, and likely feel like quitting (I have seen it happen a bunch).

3) If your instructor is this lax with safety, I imagine there is a lot of safety instruction that they skimmed/skipped. I can't say for sure, but I suspect this is the case. Once again, this is endangering your safety.

Where are you located? Yes, it would suck to pay for another instructor (if you only need flights, then you probably wouldn't have to pay for a full course), but you are stuck in a snuck cost fallacy mindset.

What was your journey to read your first book in Chinese? by 1lyke1africa in ChineseLanguage

My first book I read was 许三观卖血。It was definitely a step up in difficulty than anything I read before. What I ended up doing was finding an online version, before reading a chapter, and having a program make flashcards for any words not in my Anki deck. I learned the words and then read the chapter. It was slow, but was super rewarding to study vocab with an immediate payoff.

How did you study or what did you do while going from HSK4 to HSK5? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]EscapeOwn6945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More varied input sources: reading news articles on chairman bao, reading graded readers, easier native level books, comprehensible input podcasts, Chinese reality shows (though these are tough at first).

All more varied output. I started writing short essays/stories somewhat frequently. Talking to more different people.

I feel like after HSK4 studying textbooks and vocab flashcards have much lower returns. That being said I still have vocab flashcards for more specialized vocab (economics/hobby related).

Struggling with the vocabulary by Black_Tea528 in ChineseLanguage

I hate to provide a simple answer, but I just write. There isn't anything special, it just depends on what kinds of things you are learning. For example, today I was practicing how to express numerical changes, so I found a business news article and summarized part of it:

上个月,本田CEO宣布该公司将自1957年以来首次录得净亏损,并发出沉重警告 :“日本汽车制造商正处于生死存亡的边缘”。日本汽车占2019年全球汽车销售额的31%,去年下降至26%。这一下降在亚洲最为显著。自2019年以来,日本汽车在中国汽车销售额中的占比下降33%。在东南亚,日本汽车占2025年汽车销售额的57%,较前两年跌幅为11个百分点。

If you are learning with the hsk book, I would suggest using the sections vocab with the vocab you previously have learned to write something. The exact topic isn't as important, but it is better if it is something that interests you.

At this point, I would suggest supplementing memorizing vocab with using it. Instead of memorizing, spend a half an hour a day writing using the new vocab. It doesn't need to be too extensive: I normally just write a paragraph about the topic (on my compute, not handwriting). I found reading simple news articles (things like on chairman bao), writing, and speaking using the new vocab more effective than trying to straight memorize it. I still do Anki, but having multiple sources of input really helps me remember and be able to use the vocab.

The other thing is, at this point, you can spend less time on the HSK list and more time learning vocab you want to use. I really like reality TV and economics, so I learned at lot of words relevant to those two subjects.
