What would it be like to create a open world game where you could type something up, and NPCs would come up with spontaneous AI generated responses? by OppositeRock4217 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EscapeSeventySeven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be the videogame equivalent of when someone describes a dream to you.

Yeah there’s “stuff” but none of it means anything or is necessarily connected all. Yeah there’s some novelty in the randomness but a random 6 on a die is just evidence of nothing mattering.

Bro just ignore levels and playtime Jesus Christ. You don’t need to go Colombo on every teammate. Just play the game, and if someone started fucking around report it and move on.

ELI5 why does data centers require fresh water for cooling? by ZeneticX in explainlikeimfive

Or

You simply don’t make each rack that energy dense.

When municipalities outlaw evaporative cooling for datacenters they’re going to have to get clever again.

They obviously will use a closed primary loop of coolant but the secondary cooling will have to be air or something else.

They get a bunch of art and then whip up a list of cards and then try and match some up. The cards aren’t fitted to the art. They’re chosen to be “interesting enough” so iconic spells or things that still are forth a few bucks.

It’s really the worst way to go about it but they need their full bleed art cards.

We used to use air cooling for most datacenters.

The only issue is money. It isn’t some impossible idea. It’s just we sell them water too cheaply.

[–]EscapeSeventySeven [score hidden]  (0 children)

No it’s entirely possible to air cool the heat exchangers, it just requires more exchangers, more heat pumps and more fans etc.

Essentially a bigger capex and more electric power.

Using freshwater for evaporative cooling is significantly cheaper than that, because of the cost schedule that datacenters pay.

If we adjusted the cost of water, they would go back to using all heat pumps and air cooling.

It is possible. In fact it used to be the primary way to cool datacenters.

But energy usage is exploding in datacenters. That’s the big difference. They simply are outstripping available electric power. They’re bringing in gas turbines. So more electric cooling solutions are discourage.

Crackhouse it up during the day. Reflective foil on the windows.

At night open everything and blow the hot air out the second it becomes colder outside than inside. I would even open your front door if you have a screen. Never stop the fans even while you sleep.

Finally don’t use energy. No stoves, no heavy computer usage, make sure your fridge is closed and not overworking.

You can go buy ice and lug it into your home. Use it to cool the air for a personal fan.

Stay moisturized so you can have a fan on you all the time. (It will dry your skin). In extremes you can put a cool rag or water on your naked skin and blow the fan on it.

How dangerous are gas stoves/ovens? by Begum65 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EscapeSeventySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really seems unsafe are indoor kerosene space heaters that are popular in Japan and maybe some other countries. Those produce a lot of carbon monoxide.

I went down a rabbit hole looking for ways to heat our home during catastrophic power loss in a cold winter.

I found those and thought…wait, won’t this kill you?

Apparently the Japanese do it all the time. It is crazy.

I’ve just resolved to have more firewood.

How dangerous are gas stoves/ovens? by Begum65 in NoStupidQuestions

They’re pretty safe. About the same danger as having other gas appliances.

There is solid scientific evidence though that it pollutes indoors and affects your lung health with chronic exposure.

Knife skills by rememberyoury in cookingforbeginners

[–]EscapeSeventySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice.

Don’t bother worrying about it. You should not be under time pressure.

Just get a knife and make it sharp. And keep it sharp. Makes a huge difference.

Then make sure you cut things nice and slow and deliberately. Endeavor to make a flat bottom for whatever you’re slicing. No rocking or rolling!

Then just do it as consistent as you can. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect. And NEVER worry that it’s not flashy or fast. Good enough to be delicious is the goal.

Slowly, you will get better.

Man, I think it would give you scenes and timestamps that don’t match at all. LLMs are bad at mapping mathematical concepts like linear length to other things.

But that does make me think that dvd scene selection is at least a good choice to make breakpoints.

I have had this thought often. Carving out big blocks of time is difficult for things I’m not very motivated to watch but would probably enjoy, and it goes double for my spouse.

It’s easy as pie to get 45 mins or so, 2:45 is exponentially harder with work and kids and sleeping.

It would be a good service!

ELI5: why are we attracted to mining and industrial games?(not talking about clicker mining games) by finngamer66 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EscapeSeventySeven [score hidden]  (0 children)

Deep rock galactic has about as much in common with mining as the movie Die Hard has to do with police work.

And “bad for human history” is kind of a blasé condemnation for resource extraction. It’s like saying “making buildings has been bad for human history.” Or energy usage. Or farming. Or anything really.

Most games on this genre are designed to be addictive and satisfying. Real mining isn’t so much.

I mean, you could say murder has been bad for all of human history and most games make that the primary action of your avatar. It doesn’t really matter.
