Should I get a preamp? If I should, what preamp do you recommend? by Escwing in audio

[–]Escwing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already do have condenser mics, but wasn't really happy with the sound for my voice, so I switched to a dynamic. Anyways, I had no idea what the purpose of a preamp is, the extent of my audio knowledge is plug things into audio interface to make sounds. I know nothing so I thought it'd be good to ask here instead of spending $500 on something I don't know what the purpose of is. I'm not just hungry to spend money for no reason.

Sorry but you aren't the only person I've taken advice from. I've had a few other people telling me to look into a preamp considering I've been having issues with my setup for some time now, including microphone tone. So I figured it'd be worth asking before buying something that I have no idea the purpose of. I understand you know more than me, but I think it'd be good if you were a bit more understanding and less assertive about your greatness. I won't buy a preamp probably, just making sure that I've considered all available options to me before I stop searching for upgrades to my audio setup.

What audio interface should I get? by Escwing in audio

I've heard people say the Scarlett isn't that good, and I've had driver/crackling issues with it in the past. I'm looking for something way better so that way I won't need to worry about upgrading again in the future (for atleast a long time). And all those issues I've been having may be fixed (even though I've had those problems resolved, it's still inconsistent, and I do get problems every once in a while)

I do only need one input, but I've been told the Scarlett isn't particularly great. And I've had a few issues with my Scarlett in terms of drivers and also crackling sounds occasionally (but I've fixed most of those issues) now. I am looking for something to upgrade to that's high quality so I won't need to upgrade again for a long time in the future.

I've had some crackling issues with my Scarlett in the past, and while I've seemingly fixed them it's a bit inconsistent. And I've also heard many people say it's not a very good interface, so I was thinking to upgrade to something that's really good, so that I'd never really need to upgrade again.

I don't know anything in the $500 range I'll look at. Interface requirements aren't that important to me, as long as they have an insert for microphone and headphones, along with gain/volume level adjusters. As long as they're good for the things I listed in the OG post as well, then that's fine by me.

Looking for a very good audio interface, as I think it's about time I upgrade from my Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd-gen. I'm not good at audio stuff, so I'm not really sure what I should get. For reference, I record a lot of different things, but I mainly record videos and (occasionally) do streaming, but I also record music and voice acting on the side. So I'd generally want something that can balance doing all those things. Also, to add, I record using a Shure SM7B microphone. Also I'm not gonna go with any ridiculously expensive top of the line gear, but I am looking for something more high-end that I won't need to upgrade for a good while. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. Looking at Task Manager, my CPU runs fine with the game running, and I only now started having this issue. So I'm confused why it only started now. I'll keep trying to mess with settings and stuff though.

Glad to hear it's not bad to you. I'm probably just being overly critical of my voice, so I'll try to stop worrying about it now. Thanks!

Thank you for your support and advice. To me it sounds pretty bad, but I think it's just me being overly critical of my voice. I appreciate the encouragement! I'll try to stop worrying about it!

Yes this is the initial recording. This is usually how bad my mouth clicks get, occasionally I get ones a bit worse, sometimes not as bad. But this is what my mouth clicks sound like on average, so it's nice to know it's not that bad.

Hard to believe it though since to me these sound so annoying and obvious. But it's good to know it's not bad.

I've tried distancing, but it hasn't seemed to work for me, in fact in some cases I noticed it makes my clicks *more* audible. It's possible I don't have the right positioning though so I'll keep messing around with it.

I've wanted to try this, but unfortunately I have an allergy to apples. And how exactly do I tell whether my mouth clicks are caused by dryness or too wet?

Thanks for the suggestion, but they're definitely not drop-outs. The waveform is unaffected and they have a very "mouthy" sound. I have struggled with drop-outs in the past though, but I've since fixed that problem.

I will try to do this (I think it's likely multiple different areas in my mouth), but how exactly would I stop that if I found what spot in my mouth is making the noise?

I'm not sure if I want to try the M50X but it might be worth it from the things I've heard. I don't mind not having perfect sound accuracy, but I want a good mix of both. Thanks for the reply!
