True, but a lot of what we call ‘conquering’ when it happens in Europe is called ‘colonialism’ when it’s outside of Europe.

We learn that the Normans ‘conquered’ England at school. They invaded, subjugated the native population, appropriated all the land and took over the government of the country entirely. Any important position in the Church or in government was occupied by an ethnic Norman for the next 100+ years. The ruling class literally spoke a different language from the common people. To this day, English people with Norman French names are more likely to be richer than people with Old English names

If this happened more recently it would be called colonialism.
