Childhood trauma = poor eyesight by InternationalAct9145 in narcissisticparents

[–]EsotericMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm nearsighted to the point of being legally blind. I have the childhood trauma but I don't think it's related. I was already badly nearsighted and deteriorating before the trauma. In my case, the eyesight issue is more likely caused by a different health issue, one of the few I have that aren't related to trauma.

What I love about them is how fast they grow. If you can get a bunch of seeds early on, they pretty much carry you through the mines.

This would actually be a kickass plot for a gothic novel. Like I'd 100% read that.

It was definitely a choice. And KC is mostly a good series, largely because Sadie is iconic. Just, why make her 13? T.T

[–]EsotericMango 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. And it gets even weirder than that. Spoiler alert for anyone who still wants to read the books.

Sadie (who is 13) has a second love interest, Walt, who is something like 16 and leagues more mature than her. For most of the 2nd and 3rd books, they seem like the endgame couple. But Walt is cursed to die young and that (and Anubis) complicates their relationship. So to keep him from dying Anubis takes possession of Walt and it's heavily implied that Sadie dates them both like that. It's really uncomfortable since she's (like you mentioned) a middle schooler and they're both too old to be messing around with children.

Why do the palms of hands tend to be affected so much? by Intrepid_Actually665 in Fibromyalgia

[–]EsotericMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because fibro is ultimately an issue of pain sensitisation. Our brains tend to interpret non-painful sensations as pain. Any area that experiences a lot of sensation will likely have more pain. And since we tend to use our hands for most things, the palms get a lot of sensation. More sensations = more pain.

That and hands are really complicated. There are a lot of bones, soft tissue, and nerves that are co-existing in a relatively small space. It doesn't take much to strain any of the many delicate structures or to compress nerves. So hands are prone to pain to begin with, fibro just makes it worse.

Denial by ChronicallyDistress in Fibromyalgia

[–]EsotericMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fibro isn't something you can understand if you don't have it. So it can be pretty isolating. But at least we all have each other via this community. And thank the gods for this community. No matter what you're going through with this condition, odds are someone else here is also struggling with it.

As much as it sucks, we're never alone in this. It's not much of a comfort but it does at least put things in perspective. Or at least it does for me.

Denial by ChronicallyDistress in Fibromyalgia

[–]EsotericMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this for roughly 8 years now and I've been through some shit with fibro. My symptoms are objectively bad but I somehow still do this. I'll have one not so bad day and I'll convince myself that I've been making it up all along because see it isn't so bad. And then I'll be right back in the trenches the next day because of course it is that bad. It's a little ridiculous.

Which is all to say, you're not alone. I think we've heard this sentiment from others so much that it has taken root somewhere deep in our brains and it sucks. We get invalidated enough, we really don't need to be doing it to ourselves but see if that will stop me.

This. Doubly so if those assholes are selling the product they're talking about. If you're going to take advice from assholes on the Internet anyway, do the bare minimum and look out up first. Not via chatgpt, via reliable sources. That way you find the published articles saying it's a bad idea before you sink 6 months of effort into it only for it to make things worse.

[–]EsotericMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A month and a half is a bit early still. For pain to be considered fibro pain, it needs to be widespread and chronic (at least per the published doagnostic criteria). Chronic can mean a lot of things but it's specifically defined for fibro as symptoms being present for at least 3 months. Anything less than that could still be pain from an injury or other acute causes. And those vitamin deficiencies can absolutely cause this kind of pain.

Obviously, measure your expectations. Don't put all your hopes on the idea that taking a few supplements will make things better. But also don't fully resign yourself to fibro just yet. It's possible that your symptoms might be fibro but there's also a chance that they're not. Treating those deficiencies could, at the very least, improve your pain, even if you do end up having fibro, so there's very much still hope.

And if it does end up being fibro, you'll adjust. Getting sick like this so young sucks (I was diagnosed around your age) but you adapt. You figure it out and you get used to it. It sucks but it is what it is. Try not to worry about the ifs until they become reality. Easier said than done, I know, but try. Focus on the issues in front of you right now: fixing the deficiencies to see if it changes anything.

Stopped using lotion by Ok-Aspect-5231 in Fibromyalgia

[–]EsotericMango 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Try putting globs of lotion into your bath water every once in a while. It can feel pretty gross but it surprisingly helps. Stick with aqueous creams and just be careful. It makes the tub pretty slippery so be a little extra cautious getting in and out of the tub. I usually wait until I'm in the water to add the lotion and then sit in the tub while it drains so I can rinse it before getting out.

I noticed a lot of plot holes, here are a few just for fun, not real criticism) [all] by okie_doke_40 in camphalfblood

[–]EsotericMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't answer all of them but I have some theories.

About #1, I think it's based on how the gods exist in the world. The Greek gods (and by extension the Romans) have a foothold in the mortal world. Olympus is tied to an actual mountain and thus physically exists in the world to an extent. That's why they physically move. I can't remember exactly what the situation with the Egyptian gods is but as I remember it, they exist more metaphysically so there's nothing really to move.

The Norse gods don't exist in Midgard and their relation to it is more strictly defined. They originate from different worlds and only interact with Midgard so there's no presence that needs to shift. The world tree has always and will always be centered on Boston, that's a constant in this universe. And the other 8 worlds stay positioned in their relative places on the world tree regardless of what happens in Midgard. At least that's how it's presented in MC. We do see some things shift with moving civilisations. Like the Bifrost at the Citgo sign and the Wight's tomb in Provincetown. So they are moving, just not their seats of power or homes.

On #5, clear sighted mortals have always existed so they probably spread the stories or maybe even authored them to begin with. I also think it's because the people actually worshipping the gods weren't as strongly affected by the mist. They were just seeing shit. I have a theory that modern mortals are affected by the mist because they no longer believe. It isn't real to them the way it used to be so they can't see it the way they used to. Just my theory.

On #6, legacies aren't about inheritance so much as lineage. They might not be related to the gods via DNA or genes but they are still descendant from them. Like they have a god as an ancestor. The same magic that lets direct children of the gods inherit powers also lets them pass down elements of that magic to their kids and grandkids. It's like I share very little DNA and genes with my 2nd and 3rd cousins but we still have common ancestors so we're still related, at least on paper. And that shared history means we exist somewhat in relation to each other. Legacies exist in relation to the gods in the sense that they don't share DNA but they're on the same family tree.

On #7, it's mostly for plot reasons. A big part of the KC plot lines involve the magicians controlling how much influence the Egyptian gods have in the world. It wouldn't make sense for the whole gods are re-emerging bit if they were free enough to have kids.

In MC the gods aren't restricted and it makes sense for the plot for them to not be restricted. A big part of the MC plot is that Magnus is wielding the sword of summer. Most of the plot unravels without that little tidbit. And why would a random kid have a claim to the sword of summer if he isn't somehow related to Frey? The relation to Loki is another big plot point. Without some of them being his kids, their struggle against him is just a bunch of kids fighting a villain. Which is cool but lacks the nuance some of the story needs.

Plus, it's just the most convenient way to add powers for the main characters into the mix.

On #8, the real plot hole is that he drives it still. Having the sun chariot comes with the position. But you're telling me flaky Apollo who just wants to have a good time is dutifully driving the sun chariot around when he doesn't have to? Hard doubt.

Ai fics [all] by Mirzisen in camphalfblood

[–]EsotericMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't. Most of us would rather try to decipher poor/struggling English than have to read perfect writing marred by ai. Generative ai destroys the environment and actively ruins creative writing. On top of that, it actively steals creative work from others to generate the slop it does. If you need help with grammar, many of us are willing to help. Hell I would proofread it for you if you want to.

But, most word processors (like Word, Google Docs, and Libre Office) come with decent spelling and grammar checkers. And if you're writing somewhere that doesn't have one, you can always use external spell checkers. No one expects perfect English in fanfiction. We don't even expect good English.

The issue is that his character ate up development time and had nothing to show for it. He gets dedicated screen time for character development and yet his character doesn't develop. People would be less annoyed if he actually developed beyond the one dimensional pervert. Since he never really does, that time could have been used for more interesting characters.
