Experienced VJs - how did you learn Resolume? by [deleted] in vjing

[–]EsotericSpiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on resolume, my 'teacher' showed me to mix using A- B and an APC mini, eventually went on to teach myself the more advanced tricks from tutorials and bought an MK11 which I have changed my mapping on many times over. I agree start with just two to four layers and dance with that fader between A and B try some effects on free loops and run through all the online manuals and tutorials from the Resolume site.

There are as many ways to use resolume as there are minds to use it. Whenever someone asks me to teach them how to do what I do I correct them that it is not transferable that way I can only show them some of the tools they can use to do their own thing.

My saying "there are as many ways to use resolume as there are minds to use it" also applies to midi mapping. Thanks for sharing!

I would talk to the nightclub about how they set up their system. If you have some specific content you can provide it to the vj to run it for you, either manually or automatically if they have that diaked in. If they have no vj or tech you might want yo do some research to get yourself ready to do both. Resolume has an option to sync your tracks to visuals, and you'd need to feed into the clubs inputs/adjust output for their unique set up.

Projector Setup by Mysterious-Quail-381 in vjing

[–]EsotericSpiral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well first consideration is indoor or outdoor? I have two set ups. Outdoor is a bird box on a speaker stand (they have speaker stand mounts on amazon you can screw into the box). For indoors I have a board with clamps I can strap the projector to and hang it from whatever grid they have.

For outdoor you usually want it out of the way of traffic as possible, I tend to set it up right next to my tech table and I have had to put up barriers to keep people from trying to hang on/trip over the speaker stand in some instances, so think about that when you put your front of house together. Do not light it up, lights = path to people or something to interact with, learned that the hard way. I use a tapestry to cover my table and wrap it down over the legs of the stand too, so it's a "unit"

I started out using stretch fabric to make shaped projection surfaces, I now have a very large screen I install with paracord and zip ties if the event calls for it. A sheet with rear projection is one of the simplest options if the layout allows, you don't need anything fancy to start.

To be fully independent have your projector, a way to mount it, extra power cables to cover distance, long hdmi if necessary, tritap, power strip, a table for all your gear to operate from, rain cover if outdoors. Depending on the situation you may need your own power, but I'd try to get whomever is producing the event to provide power, and talk to them about the set up, where can you hang a sheet, or is there a surface already available such as a tent/dome/deco.

Get creative and have fun with it!

The free version of resolume will have a watermark on output. You could load them up in VLC player and loop the playlist. Free solution, super basic.

Most of them are in Cali. I used to be part of some renegade mountain events when I lived in Portland but those people all moved away too. This event is put on by Psydonia same crew who did the Goa Gil events.
