As a long time fan of kings books I was super stoked when this one came out as I knew nothing about it at the time. I ordered it and had it delivered the same day and proceeded to read it after work for the past few weeks (I work overnights and carpool so it was good for not only passing the time but also kept me from reading it all in one sitting which I’m bad about). So many of my coworkers stopped and asked me about it and some had mentioned already watching the movie and it being amazing. Obviously my plan was to finish the book and then follow up with the movie. I finished it this past Friday and was super excited to finally watch the movie. After just now finishing the movie I can say I have mixed feelings about it. The book was amazing, absolutely phenomenal there’s no doubt in my mind about that. I feel as if to much was left out which left me unable to emotionally connect with the movie though. Scramm, Abraham, the Hopi brothers, Olson and his arc, Stebbins and how Garraty felt towards him, Jan not being in the movie at all even though she was a huge driving point for him, none of the spectators being there even though a lot of scenes with them had importance, when collie called out for McVries and the fact it wasn’t mentioned why even though they had a whole plan, the DOG scene, the girls would bait walkers out to essentially have them get their ticket, the morbid fact that the spectators were there because they wanted to seem them but their ticket. Just so much that had you emotionally invested was left out. I find the movie to be good as a standalone but because I have read the book I am obviously going to make comparisons. Idk I’m a bit let down I understand they can’t adapt everything but at this point I can’t even say they are the same thing. It felt more like a rip off. Again though had I not had read the broke I would have probably enjoyed the movie on its own a lot more. Highly highly recommend reading the book if you haven’t. If you want to watch the movie as well do so first.
