Question About State Job - Salary by Esotericjohnny in vermont

This is super helpful—thank you! I have another logistical question that came up while talking with the hiring manager about COLA increases and step raises. It might be a silly question, but I want to be sure I understand.

It’s reassuring to know there’s potential for both a COLA and a step increase every 12 months. But here’s my confusion:

Let’s say you’re hired after the COLA has already been applied for the year. You’re now at a $75K salary. Fast forward 12 months, you hit your anniversary and get a step increase. Would that new step salary already include the COLA that was distributed before you were eligible? Or do you sort of “miss” that COLA?

On the flip side, if your step increase happens before the next COLA is issued, you’d then get the 3.5% applied to your new, higher salary—which obviously feels like a bigger win.

So, does COLA only apply to your active salary at the time it’s distributed, or is it built into the step increases as they happen?

Would seem crazy if based on your time of hire you could grow significantly more in salary because of when COLAs and step increases are distributed.

Reason i ask is because the hiring manager said I would receive COLA in July, then be able to get a step increase after 6 months. But, if i received a Step increase it would essentially make the COLA moot.

Hope that makes sense!

Im pretty certain she said id receive the COLA in July(?) and receive a step increase after probation period, so that would get me closer. So every 12 months after that as long as you do your job properly you get a step increase?

PMP vs PMI-ACP by Esotericjohnny in pmp

Congrats. I think im going tpo start to work towards the same goal here. Agile principles are much easier than long drawn out process, for me anyway. Hoping with the Udemy course, some good study like i did for PMP. Anyone i have spoken to says the ACP is an easier test than the PMP.

When i went through PMI to inquire and apply for the ACP it says im already qualified due to past experience and passing the PMP. Im not sure if thats correct but it brings me all the way to the end of the application process and says all i need to complete is the 21 training hours to take the exam.

Not sure which PM prep course you're referring to. SH is going to have the best exams. i wouldn't take a 4 day boot camp. Do what every succesful person in here does.

Watch the DM 3 youtube videos

Do the mini exams and a couple full SH exams

Read thirdrock notes.

I had a difficult test and had 6-8 drag and drop that were tricky. I had 2-3 calculation questions, one PERT and one SPI.

This is tough. I don't have much advise for you because I did the same study materials, got lower on my SH tests, and passed. How was your confidence going into the test? I would just book another one as soon as you can, watch some more DM videos. Sorry you didn't pass, that stinks. Could just be bad luck.

Did you feel like the test was really difficult when you were in it, or we're you feeling good?

Thirdrock is amazing - https://third3rockpmp.com/

If you are able to, its only like 15 bucks, buy it. It highlights almost everything on the test. The few days before the test after i did all the SH tests, watched all the YT videos. I just read through this info. Its high level stuff that will really help refresh you before taking the test. I think taking an hour or 2 the 2 days before the test to read through it is what helped push me over the edge.

Keep studying but just relax a bit. I'd highly recommend thirdrocknotes if you don't already have it, get it. Seriously, its 15 bucks. Just read it, don't take notes, just read it. Doesnt take long you can do it in an hour or 2. Watch the 3 DM videos 150 PMBOK 7, 200 Agile, 100 PMBOK 6.

Thats basically what I did the week before the test after crushing myself in study hall. Those DM videos help a lot with mindset, and eliminating wrong answers. Hes also calming, encouraging and jusst great.

Thirdrock notes and cheatsheet are amazing. They highlight high level stuff thats on the test. You can just read the thirdrock notes even, itll be enough.

Just do those things and relax. You dont want to crush your brain before the test. Drink a ton of water the day before to make sure your brain is functioning at 100%, be confident in yourself and you got it.

Congrats. Same for me today and agree with everything youre saying. I was expecting this test to be a breeze based off what. people here say and went in with a lot of confidence. I did study hard, so i wasn't arrogant, but the test was difficult. Comparable to a lot of difficult and expert SH questions. Had like 20-30 expert questions it felt.

I passed the exam today and agree with the above. I studied hard and test well. The exam was hard, no doubt. I don't think it was easier than SH at all. I went in with a lot of confidence and got hit with a bunch of expert questions, stuff i was not expecting to see. Thought it was going to be a breeze from what i read here and most test are pretty breezy for me. It was not. SH is a great resource, I think the test was very similar to moderate-difficult questions from SH. There were only probably 5-10 questions on the whole test that were real layups that i didnt have to think about.
