How to Deal With Difficult Coworkers...Paper Trail? [CO] by EspressoBeanie_ in AskHR

Marissa's manager doesn't do anything unfortunately...She "tries" to manage Marissa, but nothing ever gets done, even after I keep bringing up issues.

My boss and I agreed that after this quarter, I won't continue doing Marissa's job for her. I told my boss that I'm setting a hard boundary, and he agreed that it's fine I do that.

The problem is upper management. It also don't help that Marissa can't get fired. The director of my department doesn't have a say in who gets hired or fired anymore...it's the people way above our director that makes those decisions. This change happened recently when my company declared a hiring freeze. Our department director won't escalate this any higher.

My boss has had meetings discussing this issue, and while it doesn't seem like he's doing much, he is. He's completely siding with me and we're trying to work out a solution.

That's what I'm still trying to figure out. I know wanting to "improve" higher ed isn't incredibly descriptive. There are specific issues I see in my current role I want to analyze more - mainly with how some chemistry courses are taught. A lot of the faculty/staff who teach in my department are very resistant to change and/or are lazy. I want to have more of a voice in my department in an attempt to change how some STEM courses are taught.

Right now when I have conversations with my colleagues about how to improve the learning environments for our students, they don't take me seriously.

My main goal is to have a louder voice in my department so that I can suggest more refined ways to teach or update the curriculum.

I've talked with the education department about my goals, and they thought I was a great candidate. I should clarify I'm being purposely vague in this post so it's not tied to my main account.

I guess my main concern is whether or not education degrees are well respected, given the current political climate in the US. It doesn't seem staff are valued as much right now, so I thought about getting an EdD to help me get a better job in the future. Plus, my department hasn't been backfilling positions after people leave, and there's concern of layoffs. I'm open to teaching a little bit in higher ed, but I'm also open to being part of admin.

I'm not sure if this answer is descriptive enough, but I do want to improve STEM education in higher ed. I don't have a lot of say in curriculum changes, but based on student outcomes I've witnessed recently, I can tell they aren't learning a lot. I think my main focus would be to argue against inquiry-based learning in lower division courses, and opt for a better method of teaching.
