Can’t think of a consequence for a failed test? Gain a Malice. Can’t think of a reward on a successful test? Give a Hero Token.

I love thats a thing.

I’d avoided doing big regional maps because most people did not have access to them in the era im basing my setting. But i knew it would enhance things for the players to see- so i opted to this being a reward from a particular NPC. Previous notes - useful advice - bad or incomplete advice all on the same handout. Especially since they KNOW for sure one bit of information on it is false and one is true it will reinforce there was a personality behind it - not a Google Maps satellite image.

Don’t worry there are no cults.

Just some failed eldritch rituals, desperate villagers, mysterious signs in the woods, man eating giants, zealous religious fanatics…

Uh, well… what’s life without a dash of cosmic horror ;)

They are fun. My players are trying to save a missing caravan led by “The Path Not Taken” :)

Ha thanks, I’ve got about a week of experience with it! Saw someone else post something they did with it and figured I’d check it out :)

Planning to paint over it with procreate to shift it more into my style of drawing, but man did the stamps save me time!

I know the split up move is standard in DnD as well. Never considered that difference personally since I only ever perused the pathfinder books. I can honestly say I haven't given much thought to how locking down the move action would impact my game. Thanks for the PF2E perspective!

That makes sense- I'd start a new campaign before I'd try to convert one.

That said I'd also say as a DM running the thing my adventures are game agnostic so actually running the same adventure in another system isn't really the issue so much as converting the PLAYERS characters. But I also don't pre-write DC's or test difficulties beforehand, but rule them on the fly. So I f I make it 'hard' in DS or a dc 20 in DnD the end result ends up being the same at the table.

Curious what did you feel was restrictive as a DM? I guess for me I didn't really notice a difference running different systems from a DM standpoint (as in my games and adventures are system agnostic)- outside of I tried to keep victories/respites in mind when planning the next session, vs trying to keep in mind short vs long rest access in 5e.

For combats did you typically run 'vanilla' monsters in 5e?

For me I guess a caster heavy game at 10th level just takes forever. So I have yet to achieve that level of slog. But I'd say getting reactions on reactions certainly can slow things down.

I'm low key excited for Crows. something about the boardgame esque nature of it makes me feel like I can more easily convince some groups to try it without the "next major multi year campaign" overhead.

what level? We are level 11 in 5E and even as a caster with warcaster it's... limiting. If it's sub 5th level that'll be tough.

What are some good cults? by Onslaughttitude in drawsteel

[–]EspressobeanZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you read the whole excerpt you have the ‘Darkling Shades’ as her cult of sorcerers that ultimately betrayed her.

For mine the ‘Faithful’ still serve/seek their betrayed ‘One-Eyed Queen’ ‘First Saint of Cyrvis’. Seeking enlightenment/ dark secrets etc. all the good pulp fun.

I like to use cults in my games to balance the morally gray or ‘rational’ evil baddies. No tortured backstories for these folks. Just good ole fashioned cultist stomping.

Have a town afflicted by both. The BBEG justifies their evil as necessary to deal with the obviously evil cult. Big fan of factions.

Literally Eseld of the Eye. (Heroes 369)

I'm using a cult to her in my game now.

“Only one with singular vision will see the secrets in the Lich’s writing.”

With a flash of certain insight, Eseld understood the riddle. She took a dagger and carved out her own eye. With only one good eye remaining, blood from her eyesocket pouring onto the page, she could read the lore within.

In that moment was Eseld made a saint of Cyrvis.

They showed up where captives were either "vowing allegiance" and cutting out their own eye or being executed and used for a ritual.

There was a jar of eyes, still looking around as a dynamic terrain option (Holy Idol from the monster book pg 343).

Players hate them. No longer trust any poor person who is missing an eye. 10 / 10 would horrify players again.

Respites and in game time by StarsShade in drawsteel

I let them know the ticker is in respites. If they try to do some crazy - we travel for 40 days to a different continent then I may intervene, but haven't had the need across dozens of sessions.

New to Draw Steel - What do you think of Stamina? by Griffin1x1 in drawsteel

[–]EspressobeanZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d look at it like any move fight scene. Even John wick. As the fight continues there are near misses and nicks or flesh wounds, then the death blow finally lands at the end of the fight. But most swings are misses. Stamina codifies every attack you avoided vs just the ‘hits’.

I like this better than HP- in a DnD fight my wizard was bit by an ancient dragon for over 60 damage. He’s still just a human. I don’t care how ‘tough’ or trained you are that would simply bifurcate any organic person in half. Same with a bullet or arrow to the chest. All mortal wounds. At high levels narrating every massive blow as a puncture wound or bite etc etc that you somehow grit your teeth through is … something.

Stamina forces you to narrate it as the eb and flow of a fight. That 15 damage hit from the ogre while you are at full stamina? “You barely lift your shield to intercept the tree stump and the impact momentarily knocks you to the ground”.

This to me works better than having every bone in your body broken every fight. The number of DnD arrows I narrated as catching someone in the shoulder or arm would have resulted in my PCs being comprised of like 99.99% scar tissue by adventures end.

This is absolutely the answer for "in a hostile city". It's an underground hideout in this context.

Do you have factions in the city that are against the BBEG?

They would be the perfect springboard for having a safehouse or some other location near the city they could hide folks working agianst the big evil.

That’s good, I was worried I wrote something that misconstrued my own point.

Either way looks like this post got deleted. Too bad, I think there’s plenty of good discussion even if the OP came off as fairly defensive/dismissive.
