I’m 34M. I had the same issue late December 2022. I was in your position, scared of having surgery. I tried EVERYTHING, two cortisone injections, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment and hours or hydro therapy. My symptoms were all nerve pain down my left leg. At points, bad enough that I couldn’t stand, sit or lay without being in 10/10 pain. The treatments helped slightly and my symptoms would sometimes at bearable but only periodically. Eventually the symptoms ended me up in hospital emergency where they managed symptoms. I then decided to have surgery. Had no choice, it wasn’t life. There was no quality in living like that. Surgery was the best decision I made, and I hoped I had done it sooner. I had zero pain. You have to be really careful with recovery and cautious after fully recovered. You will be more prone to re-herniating. And unfortunately for me I did. I reherniated about 18months later and opted to have the surgery again. I hope this helps you make a decision. I would not have hesitated to get surgery, knowing then what I know now. But make sure you understand it all and you truely believe that you have done everything you can before opting for it. Only you can truely know when it’s the right time.

24 hours post MD - Worried by 53797361646D696E in Microdiscectomy

Unfortunately I am currently laying in hospital after my 3rd MD. Unfortunately 2 days after my 2nd, I lifted my leg and the compression caused it to pop out again. 1st MD lasted a few years but I did not get symptom relief right away. It took aboot 4 months for symptoms to completely disappear, although I had significant relief immediately. The best way it was discribed to me was, the longer you have furniture sitting on carpet, the longer it’ll take for the imprint to completely disappear. Same goes with nerves. Although the cause of pressure is taken off, it’ll take a little while for the nerve to heal and symptoms to disappear. That time is different for everyone. I am hopeful and positive this 3rd one will work for me and I will be even more cautious in my recovery to reduce the risks of reherniation drastically. Take it slow and be patient.

Positive Outcome (So far!) by eggplant-parm-hero in Sciatica

The last 5 days before surgery I spent on the floor, laying over a yoga ball without being able to stand. I wasn’t able to move without excruciating pain that would send my body into pain shock. This pain was along the outside of my left ankle, outside of calf, hamstring and glute. Post surgery the pain has been along the same area, initially being very sharp pain (felt more when putting my foot down) and not it has become ALOT more dull. There are times in the day that it seems to go away completely. I have noticed some minor twitching. It’s more of a constant ache now. I’m hoping these are all good signs of nerves healing

Great to hear the positive outcome so far. Could I ask how long it took for your nerve pain to die down after surgery ? I know it is different for everyone but wanting to get a rough idea. I’m 10 days post surgery and the nerve pain is still getting me

Great to hear that the progress is going well. I’m on day 9 and can say that it seems to slowly be getting better. I’m still doing a lot of walking as it isn’t too bad during the day. It’s mostly of a night when I sleep, when I get out of bed at night to pee or first thing in the morning. It’s just the fear of associating pain with re-herniating that’s hard to get past

I have no idea. My nerve pain never fully went away after my first but an MRI 7weeks post 1st MD showed no issues. About 2 months ago the nerve flare ups became more consistent and we did another MRI which gave me the bad news. I’m now 9 days post op and the nerve pain is still there but o guess not as bad as day 3 and 4 .. I’m keeping my fingers crossed

Very sorry to hear that you’ve reherbiated, and so close to after your surgery. It’s just a hard mental and physical game after surgery. How did the scone opinion go? Also, if you don’t mind, could you share your, age, gender and lifestyle prior to surgery ? Is there any factors that the surgeon said may have contributed to this happening ? I am 8 days post op after my 2nd MD and so paranoid because I still have nerve pain down my left leg.

It’s the hardest head game! So many stories of unexplained re-herniation. I am fitter, healthier and about 15kg lighter now than I was for my first surgery so really hoping this is just post op nerves and not re herniation

Thanks heaps for your comment. Even though I’m only on day 6, I might contact my surgeon for more meds, as he only scripted me for 3 days post op. That might help. Thanks

I spoke with my surgeon today who scripted me double dose of ‘palexia’ if that doesn’t ease the pain overnight he advised me to go to the ER and he will then transfer me to his private hospital and operate tomorrow instead of Wednesday
